Step Rings Question

Been given some filters this week, boxed set of Hoya 55mm, they are as new, but my Canon is a 58mm, if I got step rings, would they be any good to use, or would they efect the images with being smaller than my lens...or would it be better to get 58mm ones...?

doesn't work that way, using rings you can make oversized filters go onto smaller lenses, you can't put a small filter on a bigger lens

Yes you can, using a step-down ring

If your lens is a zoom lens, then at its widest angle you might get rounded edges/circle.
However, if you zoom in, you will probably be ok.

Rings are really cheap on ebay, so may be worth the punt, at least then if you like an effect, you know it will be worthwhile getting the filter in a bigger size.
