Step up from point and click

My boss has asked the question of what camera to buy his daughter for Christmas.

At the moment she has a compact point and click but she says she wants a 'proper camera' I brought my own step up from a point a click in today along with my DSLR.

I've got a Fujifilm 5600s, which is a few years old now but I have taken some decent photos with it over the years. It's a bit hit and miss sometimes when you think you have a good shot but when you check, it's not what you expected. My DSLR is a Canon 450d. I took some similar shots on both camera earlier to show him and although the Canon was clearly a lot better, some of the Fuji photos were also of a good quality.

We both think the DSLR is a bit too much for her at the moment. It would be too expensive at the moment, too bulky and a bit of an overkill for her.

The Fujifilm, though seems perfect. A good chance for her to learn about cameras without spending as much with the bonus it looks like a 'proper camera'.

As mentioned the 5600s is a few years old now and has been superseded by better models. Can anyone recommend a camera that might fit her needs. I think he's looking to spend £160 tops. It might be the case that some of the compact cameras in the market might be better than the Fujifilm ones but I think it's the impression of having a better camera that appeals. Now he has seen my Fujifilm he has been looking at this one

I wouldnt rule a a dSLR just yet, they can be had very cheap and if she takes to photography, she will have the tool she needs. I think you get better value for money with a dslr.

I paid £250 for a 400d, 18-55 IS and Tamron 55-200, 3 batteries and a 2 gig memory card.
Thats a lot of options for £250 Im sure with £160 you could get a similar body and kit lens?
Could consider a Sony or Pentax?

Thanks for that, what models of Sony and Pentax should I look for. I don't know too much about either brand. Also it wouldn't matter to me as my equipment is second hand, but he may prefer something new while it's for a christmas present.

Well i think a sony A200 is fairly cheap, its one i looked at when i was looking at my first dSLR. Im sure you could pick up a canon or nikon for a good price too. Canon, either a 350d or 400d. Im not familiar with nikons im afraid. Have you had a look through the TP classifieds?

that Fuji would be a good starting point, it will take good pictures and looks the part. A refurb fuji hs10 is £259.99 from the fujishop, so bit more, but plenty of bang!

How old is she?

How serious is she about photography rather than taking pictures?

She's 17 or there abouts. From what he says I gather she'd like to try her hand at photography whether or not she sticks with it is another thing hence the reluctance of spending too much

A second hand Canon 10D or 20D can be picked up for a song these days, for around the same or less than a new compact/bridge camera. Same for the likes of old Nikons, D50, D70 etc. The D40 which is not that old also goes for a great price, and is pretty small.
