Hi

I'm looking for a variable ND filter and my mate has one for sale pretty cheap but the only problem is that its a 62mm when both my lenses are 77mm. Would I be stupid in thinking I can use a step up ring for this?

I thought the rings only worked if I had a 77mm filter to use on a 62mm lens?

Cheers!

You can get step up and step down rings but I wouldn't use a filters that is 15mm smaller than my lens you can maybe get away with a couple of mm but with that much you will end up with big black corners :(

Ah, oh well - cheers for the reply Matt! Looks like I'll have to fork out yet even more money. :(

There may be a reason why it's for sale. Vari-NDs are next to useless on anything resembling a wide-angle IMHO. Dark cross syndrome.

But anyway, you can't go that way with a stepping ring.

Must admit I wouldn't buy one either :( how are you ever going to know what level of ND your using?

I understand they are not very good for photos, but I'll actually be using it for a documentary I'm making so only video really.

Would use the non-variable ND's for photo stuff. The filter I was going to buy was £130 but he was gonna let me have it for £40.
