Stepping up filter

I have a nice 77mm ND filter. Would it be wrong to get a 46-77mm filter thread for my little 19mm Sigma lens? What I mean by wrong is, because there's such a large difference would I notice this on the edge on a photo?

Just be careful that the step-up ring and large filter doesn't block off anything vital like the autofocus system - otherwise it should work
