As the title says really what is a good step up from the tammy 17-50 2.8? it will also be going on a canon 7d

Suppose it would have to be the Canon 17-55mm f2.8 IS USM if you are looking for the same sort of focal length but I have to say I have both the Canon and the Tamron (VC version) and there really is very little in it IQ wise. The Tamron is noisier and a bit slower to focus (and the VC takes slightly longer to stabilise) but in actual image terms you would be hard pressed to tell what was taken on which.

Image stabilisation on the Canon is great too, I went from the Tamron to a 17-55 f/2.8 and it's been a good upgrade. Less distortion, less vignetting and sharper wide open and faster to focus.

Taken handheld at 1/15th, wouldn't have been able to get away with that on the Tamron!

I have literally just done this upgrade myself! 2 weeks ago.
Went from Tam 17-50 non vc to the Canon 17-55.
Definately worth doing.
I loved my Tam, but the Canon is definately, without doubt, sharper with better colour reproduction.
The Canon is near silent focusing too.
I am very pleased I went for it.
Is there anyone you can borrow one from if you're not sure?
Thats my 2 cents anyhow :)
