I'm sure some of you must have heard of this sort of camera - it takes two photos at the same time in such a way that it enables you to view the final slide in a stereo viewer, making the image three dimensional.

I had the pleasure of playing around with one of these today and seeing some ready-made slides through the viewer. Totally blown away by the realism of the 3D effect and amazed that this technology is over 50-years old... perhaps older?

I've already put this down as a must have in the near future. Anyone here have one? Use it much?

I have seen these but never had a chance to try one or view pictures. I know Brian May (Queen) was a fan a few years ago and took it around on tour with the band. You could send him a message via his web site and see if he still uses it.

I guess the obvious reason they didn't catch on was because of the need for the special viewer but I am now wondering if you could do something clever in Photoshop so you could create a single image that would be viewable as 3D through the standard 3D specs. Now there's a challenge for someone :)

I've seen stereo photos posted on here where you just go slightly cross-eyed to see them. Works well but it would give me a head-ache if I spent too long looking at them.

There's a woman at my camera cub that specialises in this and she uses a special projector with polarised glasses. The effect is brilliant, but often her pictures aren't the most exciting (things like local park fountains taken in midday sun) so I'd love to see some really engaging subjects done this way.

The guy I met today who showed me his stereo kit said that it is possible to project the stereo image using a specialised projector and your audience can view them with 3d glasses. It's easy to see why this wouldn't catch on, but it could be cool for your own viewing pleasure (why I'm into photography).

Another way of viewing them is through some kind of stereo-image card which can be created from the original slides using special scanning software... again I think 3d glasses are the way to view these cards.

He's also given me some contacts in the USA who are experts in this and can point in the right direction, though I've left all the info on my writing pad at work... Otherwise I'd love to get in touch with Brian May - massive Queen fan me is!

Hey go ahead and email the guy. He does actualy post replies on the site regularly and not just about the music. I used to be a big fan too - when they were four :)
