Steve McCurry is a legend in the photography world. He has a wondering spirit that has taken him all over the world covering major conflicts, but he also has a breathtakingly beautiful ability to capture the culture and beauty of a country.

He's the only photographer ever to have won four first prizes in the world press photo contest in the same year. In that same year, he won the magazine photographer of the year, awarded by the national press association.

He shoots in colour, he uses Nikon film slrs and lenses these days (sorry canon lovers lol). I have never seen better colour photographs. They are simply beyond anything i've seen.

He gives some insight in to how he captures such beauty

"It's not that i'm looking for the right light or the right colour. What i'm often doing is trying to avoid light that i find unappealling, or colours that i find awkward and don't have harmony & don't have flow"

I really find it interesting that he finds what he's looking for by avoiding.

Might come as no surprise that he's a member of Magnum and has been for 20 years. You can find a Magnum in motion doc with commentary by Steve on his shots here http://inmotion.magnumphotos.com/essays/mccurry.aspx

I have quite a few books on magnum shooters McCurry included, & much more besides and there is no "How to" Book that can compare to just quietly sitting down and looking at something that is just simply beautiful in print

There's a world of inspiration out there in print

There are many essays on magnum shooters below.

Anyway, for those that are viewing Steve's work for the first time, I think you'll have your breath taken away, and that feeling won't dwindle with each time you return

Cheers

there is some excellent and very inspirational stuff there Sean, thanks for the link

Great stuff Sean ... there are some real lesson there. Tell you what I notice immediately, and I noticed it yesterday when I checked out a nice exhibit in the kids library in Brum too, that all these shots worth a look are taken from an individual eye and not a derivative or gear fixated approach. How rare is that to see on a forum? Shocking really. Inspiring stuff. I'll catch up on that Magnum stuff when I am next on holiday. Don't have the time or attention to do it at the moment. Their ice-lollies are good tho' :naughty:

if anyone has anylinks that they want to share or links to exhibitions of interest then please post them!
