Still Life Lens Help

Slightly new here... (found lots of great threads so far that provides lot of advice)... first post:

I'm looking for a Canon lens for studio still life. In particular shooting some overhead work, with limited height availability due to my low-ceiling.

I need to get flat artwork of up to 1m x 2m into frame, without being more than 2m above the subject, and with as little edge distortion as possible. There is almost no depth to these flat artworks, but there is no real way to hang them without damage or needing photoshop post to take out supports. So overhead is the only option. A couple of flash softboxes will provide ideal light conditions, so lens does not need to compensate for light.

After achieving the above requirement (the main reason for buying my first SLR) then I'd like it to be as much of an all-rounder as can be hoped for... a second lens is likely to be out of budget for some time. I dont' have a body at the moment, I need to price the lens and then see what body I can afford but would like a 5D MkII.

Can anyone advise?

Help much appreciated.

For flat artwork and zero distortion, you want a macro lens, but the size and height would mean a focal length around 35mm on full frame, which doesn't exist (on the affordable side of a tilt & shift lens).

Your only option is a regular lens, well stopped down to get high corner sharpness, and correcting any distortion in software. Shooting from further away is a much better starting point.

Welcome to TP :)

Thanks Hoppy

I suspected I might not achieve exactly what I wanted…

Can anyone suggest some suitable all-round lens for still life work. I've read plenty of threads but many concentrate on macro, and I dont see many recommendations for fixed lens for still life. And is wide-angle an option?

I'm trying to budget my equipment before I splash on the MkII body. I think I'll begin by hiring a few lens. Can you suggest a few to try...
