Hi everyone
last week I was on here asking for any advice on downloading pics form a Canon 550d in raw to Photoshop elements 8
I can't seem to get Photoshop to recognize the file for some reason although I can download to my docs or Picasa. Iv'e had all the updates still no luck. One of you suggested a card reader or new USB cable.
As there are so many readers on the market any ideas which one and how likely is this going to sort it. Iv'e always just used the supplied cable and never had a problem with my Canon 1000d
Thanks for all the advice so far at least I know a little bit more than I did before I started

As you say, there are loads of them on the market, I personally have been using THIS one for nearly 2 years and it has been faultless, but cannot guarantee it will solve your problem. Other people will all have their own preferences for card readers. If it is just a download issue, it may well be the answer. If it is a problem with your software [and it does sound like it may be if your can download to docs or picassa] not actually recognizing the image file types, then it may require additional software updates or pluggins, but you will need a canon expert to advice on that. :)

Not sure, but thinking maybe PSE8 Camera RAW doesn't support the 550D, will have a quick research and see what comes up

*EDIT* Thought that might be the case, you will need PSE9 or later to use the correct version of Camera Raw to support the 550D

Best workaround is use the Adobe RAW converter which will change the files to DNG and they can be opened by your version of Camera RAW via PSE8 http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=5310

Alternatively use the DPP software which came with your camera

Its ACR 6.1 which supports your camera and the 1000D was supported by an earlier version which would work with PSE8

Adobe often do this with their software so you have to upgrade when you buy a new camera

Just as a matter of interest Iv'e just tried to put it straight to photoshop, it will not let me , says that the file has been damadged.what do you think would be damadged. I can still see them in camrea and computer

Hi,

You have to Download the Camer Raw Plugin from Adobe.

I had to with my 550D later versions of Elements will Support that camera.

Compatibility
The Camera Raw 6.1 plug-in is not compatible with versions of Photoshop earlier than Photoshop CS5 or versions of Photoshop Elements earlier than Photoshop Elements 8.0 for Windows and Photoshop Elements 8 for Mac.

Photoshop Elements:
Windows®:
NOTE: You must follow all of the new instructions in order to successfully install the Camera Raw Plug-in for Photoshop Elements.
1. Exit Photoshop Elements
2. Open the download file and double-click CameraProfiles.exe and follow the on-screen
instructions.
3. Double-click Local Disk (C)
4. Navigate to the following location:
a. Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Plug-ins\Elements 8\ File Formats
5. Move the existing Camera Raw.8bi plug-in to another location (for example, a new folder on your
desktop). Ensure you keep this version in case you need to revert back.
6. Copy the Camera Raw plug-in, Camera Raw.8bi, from the download into the same folder as
Step 4.
7. Launch Photoshop Elements

Regards.

If you can download them but the software wont recognise them I would doubt its a problem with the lead

Have you downloaded the latest Adobe RAW plug in ?

No idea, what version of Photoshop? that would have the same problem as PSE if its an older version that doesn't support the correct Adobe Camera RAW

The latest version of ACR that PSE8 will accept doesn't support the 550D, as I said either convert to DNG, use Canon DPP or another RAW editor or buy a later version of PSE/PS/Lightroom

I suppose if Iv'e got to by anew version of photoshop I probably get photoshop5, its a whole lot cheaper, they use 5 with the 550 in the clubI go to but will my 550 work that way for me

Photoshop CS5 supports ACR version 6.6 so will definitely work with your camera

How about Lightroom 3, same RAW converter as CS5 and whole lot cheaper, all depends what you need from your software

Can you or one of your family qualify for the student version, not only students, but education employees such as teachers and support staff are also eligible. Got LR3 via my wife for about seventy quid and think CS5 is about £200 or so

Looks good, seems I overlooked that one and sure that will do the trick :bonk:

I did have the right idea though
