Hi, I recently put my desktop tower in to be repaired (virus ,new gaphics card fitted) i also had what the guy called a sanitise wipe and backup done ,the backup was a disaster lost nearly all my photo files ,worse than that ,there were loads of my grand daughter Maisie Leigh :thumbsdown:.

Anyways ,last night was the first proper session since it was "so called sorted" £50 the guy charged . I was maybe on it for about an hr and a half 2 tops ,then the screen went a blank pale blue ,i tried to do the Ctrl-Alt-del route ,i tried escape button ,the only way i could shut down was press and hold the power button on the tower ,also when this was going on the tower felt very warm in the graphics card area.So i waited a wee while then switched it on again, mucked about to see if the screen would do the same ....guess what !!! it did ,so before i turned off the tower i removed the side panel to see if all the fans were working and they were .

Anyone have any ideas before i go back to the shop.

So you paid him to backup your files and do a fresh install and he messed it up resulting in a loss of files?

I'd already be looking at damages for that, can you really put a price on your grand daughters photos?

Regarding the new GFX card, did you buy it and he fit it or was it included as part of the £50??

Go to your system info and tell us what gfx card you have fitted.

Whole thing sounds like a con to me.

2 things to try are:

Take side panel off, make sure card is pushed in properly and get a desk fan blowing cold air in. see if it still crashes.

2nd thing would be to try updating your drivers for it.
 
When he phone me to say it was ready for collection i asked how did he get on with backing up my photos ,i remember saying i wasn't worried about the other stuff as long as my grand daughter's were saved ,he said there was 32gb of photos ,when i checked there was only 320mb .:eek:

Regarding the card ..it's a GIGABYTE Nvidia 8400GS series (version 1.4) I supplied the card ,Well i say supplied ,i'd already fitted it and thats when the problems started ,the guy said i'd already had the virus before fitting new GFX card

It makes me blood boil when technicians manage to mess up such a simple issue.

Next time, keep a backup of your data yourself.
 
Are you sure it was a virus and not a driver issue with the new card?

Graphics cards do get hot, so you need to make sure you have sufficent cooling in and around the desktop. My graphics card gets up to 97 deg C on full whack!! If its not cooling sufficently, the system may shut itself down to prevent damage.

After a really bad expeience many years ago with a so called technician. I will never trust nor use them ever again. I was 15 years old, but seemed to know more about computers than he did. He basicly swapped out all the good componants of the computer with ones of a much lesser spec and tried to fob my Mum off with it. If it wasnt for me telling her what he had done, he would have got away with it and she would have spent £150 to have her computer despecced.

Yep... it's something i kept meaning to do ....lesson learned the hard way :shake:

I'd question calling them technicians after what they've done

I wish i knew more about computers ,afraid i can only go on what they said to me ,they reckon the virus came from limewire allegedly which was only installed for about a day (kids ..eh ) before it was removed .As for the driver issue ,what issues can there be on a straight swap.?

At the moment i've a 300mm fan keeping things cool ,it's not blowing directly onto it just enough to cause a cooling draft and it seems to be working .

Just have to workout how to fit it in the tower now :D

A simple swap of a GFX card assumes that your old one is in the same chipset and that your already installed drivers include the 'new' GFX card, did they? If not then you should have uninstalled the old before removing and then so to speak started afresh with the new card and its drivers ;)

As for the virus and data backup ~ well lesson learned. :bang::thumbs:

Edit - re the (over)heating of the card ~ daft question (sorry if I missed it) but is the GFX card fan running???

PS I see now that Gigabyte make a few variants and some use passive cooling (i.e. a fluted heatsink only) but aslo see that the ones with fans require a min of a 300W powers supply. What is your version of the card and what wattage is your power supply?

GFX card fan is running ,i'm thinking the fan on new GRX card's not up to the task inhand ,it's quite abit smaller than original,my guess is there's not alot i can do about that, or is there?
 
Hmmmm! I would have thought that the 'thermal solution' they build onto the GFX cards is right for the job but "they" are working on the premise that the whole PC case is properly ventilated i.e. does it have a an airflow running through it ~ fans at the front to draw air in and fans at the back to expel the hot air? I note the the fanned versins of the car you have do not vent to the outside but into the body of the PC casing so you would need to shift air overall to keep everything cool & long lived.

IMO most consumer cases are under ventilated ??? So when folk upgrade they can run into cooling issues!
 
Sownlaod PC Wizard (its free) It will allow you to monitor temperatures (and a lot more) of the processor and graphics card.

That would allow you either find out what is overheating or rule it out.

Def agree about the graphics cars drivers find the latest ones from the Nvdia site
 
Can the cooling fan speed be altered at all on the GFX card ...bit of a long shot i know :D .. it's looking like a heat problem ,comps been running perfect since i've been using the extra fan :)
