Hi

I am off to Nepal on Sunday for 2 and a half months. I am doing a couple of treks which last around a month each so am looking for a way to store as I go (won't have access to internet!) I have 3 4GB cards but don't think this will be enough.

I am looking for an equivalent of these but something I can pick up in a store in the UK:

Does anyone know where these might be available (or any other alternatives)?

Thanks
Fred

Thanks for the replies.
A netbook is something I am considering, as are more cards!
Only problem with netbook is the price, they seem to be around £250 for a decent one with a good size hard drive and battery life.

Can you recommend somewhere I can buy cheap cards or good value netbooks in time for Sunday?

Amazon do a few photo storage devices, like this one.

I used to use an old Archos Gmini which had a CF reader but it was rubbish.
I think the cheapest netbook with a decent hard drive might be the best option.

At this late stage I wouldn't rush into buying hardware from the high street without giving it proper thought / research. If I were you I would buy a couple more cards to take with you and leave it at that. If you run out you can buy memory cards in most places all over the world - I'm sure you wouldn't have to go far to find some if you were out of space.

If you end up with too many you could always sell them on here when you get back. Then look into storage solutions in plenty of time before your next trip.

Have you got an ipod? Comet sell an adaptor to download your pics via usb to the ipod (have no ides if this works with raw files though), my sister used one when they went around the world for 12 months. They also used various libraries and internet cafes to burn their pics to cd as another backup.

Not sure of the amount of public computers in Nepal though!

I have one of these with a 120GB drive in there. connect it to the camera and press the copy button it transfers the contents of the card to the hard drive. it comes with a battery pack using 4 AA batteries for power and uses a normal usb cable to transfer. problem is your not going to get it for Sunday.
Best option is a netbook.

Thanks everyone for the information. I usually rush into buying stuff I don't need, so I am going to try and learn from my mistakes and not get the netbook!

I think I will pick up 8GB more storage in memory cards which gives me about 1000 RAW images for 25 days. This should be enough.

Apparently there are some internet cafes in the capital which I will return to after each trip and follow your advice upload to smugmug vault and back up on DVDs.

The IPOD cable sounds interesting I will check up on it tomorrow!

Can anyone recommend a shop which sells cards cheap?

Thanks again

I use a Hyperdrive Colorspace UDMA. But I'm very tempted to try out one of these - Link. 500 GB of (supposed) high-speed backup for less than £180 does sound good. And eSATA means I'll be able to transfer stuff to my PC at 2 - 3 times the speed of using USB2.

A month?
I'd need to take some form of editing platform with me if I were going away for that length of time.
Forget the netbook unless you're really strapped for space - get a proper lightweight notebook like a Dell Inspiron or something similar - £300-£400 so it's not a total disaster if it gets trashed/stolen/etc. Load Photoshop elements onto it so you can do some basic edits in the field. Wrap it in a poly-bag and a spare towel and shove it in the rucksack on the side nearest your back.
Take a portable 500Gb external hard drive - the ruggedised ones - and back everything up onto that, making sure you keep it in a seperate bag or compartment to the lappy in case the worst happens.

And before you say "it's too heavy, I can't carry all that"... well I do - and a Thrane & Thrane Explorer 700 BGAN inmarsat satellite dish...
