I have been sorting out all mphots we have on the pc and on discs, I put everything onto discs but there are dozens and dozens of dvd discs with images on and home movies, is there a method or software or device where I can store them all and at the press of a button or type in the file name (I know I am going to have to rename all the images) and it will just pop up?

Especially with my new toys coming I am trying to create a system that I know what image is where.

Best solution requires new software and hardware. Storing photos on DVD just doesn't make sense - hard drives are cheaper, faster and easier to access. So I'd copy all my images onto hard drive (preferably two drives so you have a backup).

Once they're all on hard drive a program like Lightroom, ACDSee, or Picasa will index your photos to make it easy to find them.

Thanks Frank will have a look into that.

Jullian look for Faststone image viewer, it's free to download.

I use it for cataloguing my photo's but I'm not sure it will do video.

It will also allow you to batch rename files and do very basic editing.

Get all your photo's off DVD there's been a lot of discussion recently on the web about people losing data as dvd's aren't secure.

I use 2 x 500g Seagate freeagent drives and copy everything to them.

Then I use Mocrosnots Synctoy ( again free ) to synchronise both drives so they are identical.
