Storing DSLR In Bag

Hi all,

Just purchased one of those purpose made DSLR backpacks with the internal dividers etc. I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on whether or not it's safe enough to store the body with lens attached when the camera isn't being used. Am I doing any harm to the body or lens by having them attached in the bag for a few days at a time? Are they likely to let in more dust stored that way?

Obviously out of pure laziness I'd prefer to store them attached and ready to go but I that'll be detrimental in any way I'd rather not do it.

Any thoughts appreciated.

Cheers,

Danny.

I was once told by a Canon rep that the biggest source of dust in DSLR was minute pices of plastic being shed by the body cap. By storing the lens and body together you are reducing the risk of dust from the body cap, so you have nothing to lose by storing the body and lens attached to each other..

The only risk of storing in the bag is if the bag is damp at all, but that is a very small risk.

The best way to store a camera is in dry room temperature conditions

Perfectly safe.

I always keep my camera with the lens attached. In one of my bags. Never had a problem.

My cameras live in the bag, always have and always will!

Just a bit more reassurance then

As above, stored in my bag, with lens attached...

The only time I've ever had a body cap on my cameras are when i've first got them delivered....
My camera spends a lot of it's time in it's rucksack with a lens attached premanently.
Besides, bit of dust never hurt anyone, if you can't see it in the image...lifes too short to worry about it...

Same here, the lens is always attached to the body.

There was recently reported a case at Cadbury World, I believe it was, when someone in a queue carrying a rucksack camera bag had their camera stolen while still carrying it. Seems the thief just unzipped the rucksack and helped themselves.
So I thought it worth a mention

iv had my lens attatched all the time its been in a bag not a rucksack but a grab bag with only a velcro flap
out in afghanistan and ive had no problems with dust

your more likly to get dust from opening it to the elements to put the lens on

all of my camera gear is stored in my Lowepro bag all of the time

Unless as said, the bag itself gets damp then obviously- I store it elsewhere, and dry out the bag
And presently my 150-500mm is attached to my a65 at all times, you never know when a shot will present its self

My rucksack has a top opening - keep my little gorillapod in here and bits and bobs
The main separate area for the camera and lenses doesn't open at the front, but at the 'back' (ie. bit in contact with your back) - the 2 compartments are totally separate, you cant access the bottom lens/camera area from the top.
This is mine - does the job:

Your Cadbury World story is what I used to be concerned about as well.

I have a DSLR backpack and always store my camera in it when it is not being used generally with either my 300mm or 35mm on and I've had zero issues.

I have a rucksack type with 2 zips that close together, I have a spring loaded clip that goes through both zips, It takes a bit of effort to undo, but hopefully you feel something if someone tried to unzip it, I'd be more worried about them simply slitting the bag with a large sharp knife.

mine have always been happy enough in bags with lenses attached.
the less you're removing & refitting lenses the less chance you have of any outside contaminants getting in

Same here.

One of my lenses is always attached to the body when not in use, all of which is kept in my padded Lowepro bag. I can't imagine a safer place to avoid damage or dust

I always keep my camera in my rucksack when I'm not using it. I hate to think what I might do to it if I kept it almost anywhere else!

Add on question - do you remove your battery if you're not using the camera for a few weeks? I don't tend to, but wondering whether I really should?

To much here to store in bags,so spare bodies & lens in Peli 1600 case.

Two bags packed ready to go a mirrorlees one,and DSLR one.

The rest of my bits & bobs, and film stuff in a cupboard.

:)
