This is probably a stupid question but whats the best way to store lenses when not in use?
 
dried (after rain) and cleaned well before putting back in my camera bag, then i always know where it all is. hth Mike
 
I store mine either in my camera bag or in a large plastic container with a lid (just for extra safety)...
 
Silica gel good - humidity promotes fungus!

Damp is the main enemy as alluded to above, fungus will form if damp prevails. My lenses are stored in a room with a solid fuel stove in winter, which promotes a dry atmosphere. In addition, all my bags have silica gel sachets in them at all times. When you come into the warm after an outside cold/damp shoot, unpack your lenses and camera and allow them to slowly come to room temperature before storing as above.
 
Definitely use silica gel. I store my kit in Peli cases. Appreciate they're expensive but when I bought them I also bought some silica gel canisters. They are metal cases, sealed, and full of tiny perforations. The beauty of these is that when the gel goes a clear colour, you pop them in the oven for a couple of hours and they're ready to go again. The little sachets, similar to those that probably came with your camera, cannot be reused and you can't tell when they've passed their best. Have a look at www.waterproof-cases.co.uk you'll find them there. Again, they're not cheap but then nor is your kit and I think they're worth the expense (silica gel canisters that is)

Daugirdas, sorry but I posted from my phone (great app btw). It wasn't until I fired the PC I'd red flagged it - although I have no idea what NSFW means?

At present I have my lenses on a shelf in a spare room in the Nikon style felt bags of Sigma cases.

Thanks for the tip on Silica but you'll need a lot an a hermetically enclosure as its super efficient and will drain your room too - the things you learn working for the MoD.
I have a large clip seal box that I will use and foam it out a bit

Always leave my gear in my Camera bags with some gel on the lenses etc. and always put the bag on a shelf! Just a heads up don't leave your camera bag on the carpet. I use to leave my camera bag ages ago until I discovered that my Camera got Dust mites crawling across the sensor, luckily I could blow them off but you don't want them invading your camera its not a pretty sight!
 
As long as my lenses don't actually get splattered with gack when I'm using them, I tend to just shove them back in my bag and shove the bag in the cupboard when I get home. Stuff I don't regularly use lives in an old peli case and stuff that gets used a lot lives in one of several camera bags. The back caps go on when I'm not using lenses and most of them have a skylight filter on the front.

Sometimes, I wipe them off with my T-shirt before I start work :naughty:

I've got all my kit in my hard case with a few silica gel packs inside. Before I got the hard case it was all stored in my camera bag. The wife also has all her kit in a bag with some silica packs. We've never had any problems with any of the kit.
 
As a non camera based answer to silica and from MoD tests, silca is a water magnet. If you put silica in an air tight box it will dry out the contents. You can gently bake it to dry it out again. 500g of silica will probablyy be of little use when exposed to UK atmosphere for more then an hour as it is so good its trying to dry your county out.
From the ad ice I received here, I will be using some not to keep dry but to dry out any residual moisture left on the lens before storing.
