Inspired by Andy77's pencil shots, I thought I'd have a go myself. The process is more time consuming than you would think. I used a Sigma 150mm macro lens, a reflector and a SB900 flash. I've already spotted plenty of errors with them already, but have a look and tell me what you think.

Nothing critical to say about the photography but I don't like the pencils. A couple if them have been sharpened funny and they are round - I think the pencil pics look best with bright new hexagonal pencils x
 
Ok also first pic I would say you need another pencil on the left pointing down so it looks more symmetrical

Next shot I'd say line them up so their tips are all on an even horizontal line, then I'd crop the left and right edges so there's no gaps at the sides
 
Agreed, they look a bit ragged. Also the dark leads get lost in the background. Keep at it!
 
I like no. 3 best tho' I agree with penguin about no. 2 - the tips need to be more level

I am not an expert with lighting but it looks fine to me :)
