ok this is my first ever attempt, what do you think?

It would be better if it were in focus...how many others did you shoot of the same subject, or was this just a grab-shot?
Maybe shooting from the front, establishing a bit of eye contact? They wont arrest you for photographing them and a grumpy-look might even improve matters...lol

Think I'd agree with Arkady & suggest going for the coming towards you, eye contact shot for the most impact.
Exposure looks really well controlled btw
