If 'P' mode is often good enough for the likes of Martin Parr, then it's good enough for me. (y)
 
does the camera know its on auto and sets the controls just as they would on aperture priority or speed priority...
the object is to frame, expose and have the major elements sharp...your auto is probably within 90-99 percent the others would give
the dof is the only thing one may wish to control
the exposure falls into place so long as camera shake doesnt occur

but i really think these are street photography and not taken to study portraiture whose aim is to show the sides of a persons persona....which is not always available unless "posed" and allows the sitter to "think" about the work taking place
