Just a thought Gary,
could one use a couple of strips of black card or material over each side of a larger softbox to give a strip effect, or would that not be effective at all? Having a larger softbox could then be used in both ways?

Yes, the best material is Cinefoil (AKA blackwrap) but anything will do, including black bin bags. The only downside is loss of power.
