Strobe with umbrella - use metal reflector or not?

Yes
I've managed to answer the question before I typed it - the metal reflectors hold the magnetic gels, that I need for this shoot.

I'm new to strobe lighting, partly because I got enthused at a Wex event, and partly because there was a discontinued Wescott set at a price I couldn't resist! I have a couple of umbrellas and was wanting some advice on whether I should remove the metal reflectors when using the umbrellas. (except, as noted above, I need gels for this shoot and the gels that came with the set mount onto the reflector!)

Tia!

the question remains, can you mount a brolly whilst using that reflector and gels?

My Bowens mount reflectors have a hole for the brolly shaft

Yes, that's no problem, the strobes have holes. It does mean that the strobe isn't as centred as it could be in the umbrella.

Thanks!

You should use the reflector; you want to fill the umbrella as much as possible, but you do not want spill (light going around it).
Good point, yes, that makes sense. Thanks!
