I haven't shot anything for quite some time but when I used to shoot a lot I enjoyed a pretty mixed variety of subjects. I enjoy people photography, wedding, portraiture, studio and street mainly. I shot with fast primes a lot at the time because they really did deliver the sharpest images and also because I liked having the option to really isolate the subject when I wanted to.

If I had to pick a favourite focal length it would have to be 35mm, perfect for environmental portraiture.

This is going to be a hobby camera but I guess I've never shaken the thought of going professional (grass is always greener and all). It's probably one of those dreams that will never happen but I always buy my kit with that in mind, lol

D750 features that appeal
  • Light
  • Dual SD Cards
  • Price (More money for lenses)
D810 features that appeal
  • Feels better in the hand
  • Quiet Shutter
  • 1/8000th shutter speed

Any thoughts?

Tough choice, you wouldnt regret either way. I went for D750 personally, both have pros and cons, D750 more pros for me.

I'm pondering the same, but for me I think it will end up being the D750 as the cost saving will go towards upgrading DX lenses.

Im using the 35 ART and 50 1.4 on mine and they balance fine.
 
I have a D750, the wife got me it for Christmas and its fine but if I didn't already have a D800 I would have returned it and got the D810 instead.

The only advantage really I can see with the D750 is the smaller files sizes which is handy for weddings etc.

I prefer the round viewfinder and the option of flicking a button to close it for long exposures rather than using the silly little plastic blanking piece, 1/4000th sec can be a bit of a pain if you shoot wide open a lot and the image quality isn't as good.

Reading your post closely, I think that you are aiming for the best possible quality. Get the D810, there's not really anything not to like & if you don't buy it, you'll have a nagging thought at the back of your mind that you missed out on the best.

Edit: Just a little add-on, the 1/8000 shutter is great for shooting with f1.4 lenses wide open.

Ive had the 700 and 800 so I can make a valid comparison. ;)

The Sigma 35 isnt a particularly heavy lens @ 665g, the D750 is 840g.

I have both and IQ wise there really isn't a huge amount in it when shooting in real word situations. The extra MP of the D810 is great and the files require little or no sharpening with the right lenses, overall it is a better camera imho. Having said that, I've just started using two D750's for weddings, mainly because of weight, moire issue's with mens suits and how it kicks the D810's arse in really crappy light. For everything else the D810 still is my first choice, awesome.
 
Had an 800, now got a 750.
 
Thanks for all the feedback guys, it's really appreciated.

I'm edging towards the D810, mainly due to the feel of it in my hand but the moire issue really puts me off. The D750 looks fantastic.

It's not really an issue as such but due to the lack of an AA filter when you get it it'll be quite bad.

All depends on what you're shooting, I'd assume most will rarely ever come across it but I see it a lot on dark fabrics.
 
Many new cameras don't have a low pass filter, even my wife's D3300 doesn't have one. Neither of us have ever had a problem - even a portrait of someone wearing a check jacket. Moire can be fixed PP anyhow. The D750 doesn't have a low pass filter either.

Pretty sure the D750 does have a low pass filter, someone correct me if that's not the case.

In my experience moire isn't that easily removed, yes you can get rid of the rainbow effect quickly but the pattern left behind isn't as easily dealt with.

It's easy enough to reproduce, grab a brolly and take a shot (this actually isn't too bad of an example, it can look a lot worse but you get the idea):

I was recently in the same situation and went for these D810 - the ability to switch to DX crop using one of the function buttons and still getting 16Mp was a big bonus. My 35mm 1.4 ART then can act as a 50mm and my 85mm 1.4 can act as a 130mm if needed.

I know the D750 would do the same, but you'd have a much smaller DX file.

I do miss the tilting LCD screen though.
 
I'm on my way to the local camera shop now to have a look. I'll be leaving with one or the other, lol

I can get a lot more bang for my buck with the D750 but the built quality of the D810 (mainly the feel in my hand and the eye piece are calling to me).

My mistake, it's a little difficult to find out, but I can confirm that the D750 does have an OLPF. So your shots of those pesky umbrellas are safe! ;)
 
Well that was pretty pointless, out of stock on both bodies and two of the three lenses I wanted.

I wonder why people shop online!

I didn't know there was another one?

He said they had stock Elswhere in the country he could have in by Thursday but if I'm going to wait that long I might as well order from Panamoz and save £400.

I was but that was the point of going. To pick one and walk away with it.

I'm going to go with the D750 it's a fantastic camera and you get a lot of bang for your buck.

Thanks Ed, I went back into the Liverpool store tonight after work and ordered everything I wanted. They are going to pull it all in from other local stores.

I'll have everything by Thursday so not too much of a wait.

BTW I'm liking one of the D750s they had on Saturday. ;)
 
I did pay a bit more than I had to given the Grey Import options that are about at the moment but with the offers I got it was only about £380 more and for that I get a UK Warranty as well.

The staff were great and it's nice to support a local store. It's the last one in Liverpool City Centre so I'd rather it didn't close.

Just have to wait now............................
