Hi all,

I don't suppose any of you have any nifty little tricks for removing an over tightened filter? It appears I don't know my own strength :bonk:
 
Try turning it by pressing it gently against the palm of your open hand rather than gripping it by the sides.
 
Thanks for the replies. I tried the palm of my hand but to no avail, I don't have a strap wrench but I did try one of those jar opener jobbies, still no luck though :(

I think they are basically the same thing, From a mechanical point of view I would try VERY LIGHTLY tapping around the filter with something hard and maybe as a last resort Plus-Gas or similar. I wouldn't want to get Plus Gas on the glass though so I'd only try as a last resort.


One last Silly question you are turning it the right way right?

Y'know, I was just wondering the exact same thing myself :lol:

Try putting a piece of rubber mat or similar on the floor, press the filter end of the lens against this with the camera and twist (in the right direction ;) )
This may still work just straight on the carpet but the friction of a rubber mat is better
 
Try unscrewing it while wearing a rubber glove.....

You Sir, are a genius! Worked like a charm. Funnily enough, i'd just gone out and bought a new rubber bath mat :thumbs:

Too late to solve your problem, but a thick elastic band around the filter provides plenty of grip and has worked for me.
 
I was told many years ago that the best way to remove a stuck filter was to press it against the sole of your shoe, preferably a rubber sole and to twist.

I shall make a note of that and carry an elastic band in my bag from now on. I'd probably look a bit of a plank carrying my bath mat around with me :lol:

Makes sense! Maybe no need to carry an elastic band with me after all :shrug:

I think I would prefer an elastic band to the sole of my shoe when it comes to removing my £90 CPL filter!
 
Pressing the front edge of the filter against a car tyre sidewall and unscrewing can also help.

To reduce the chance of a filter sticking again, don't overtighten (...) and a tiny bit of soft pencil lead (use a 2B pencil and just draw a short line on the filter thread - like I said, a TINY bit!) will lubricate enough to help.
