Hello,

last night i spent a night in a studio trying to get my head around the equipment, didnt really got to plan so decided i would convert a garage space into a make shift studio.

Dont have a massive amount to spend so look for some suggestions as to what i would need as a bare minimum.

Any suggestions are much appreciated.

Thanks

If you are converting a garage, I'd suggest:

A backdrop of some sort. Which could be a painted wall, a clean bed sheet, etc....

Something to suspend it with. A set of poles or simply some hooks in the ceiling.

A power supply with suitable RCD

Some sort of flash lighting, which could range from a cheap IR trigger flash on a tripod to a set of studio lights.

A simple reflector might also be useful (you could paint a piece of 4mm ply white - or you could just go out and buy a reflector)

I guess it all depends on your budget and what you want to achieve.

edit to add: A heater for the models ;)

What didn't go to plan and which bits are you struggling with?

well to start the synch lead to the flashes didnt work with my cheap ebay sony hot shoe adaptor. Then used a borrowed Canon which i couldnt find the settings so was a bit of a disaster. The photos i did get were over overexposed on the subject but thinking about it today i think the two strobes that were there to light the background may have been too far forward so the light was hitting the subject.

Basicalli want to be able to do portraits and, wa thinking possibly a large rol of paper with a holder, two lights for thte background and oe to light the subject, then a light meter and cable.

The ones i was using liast night were bowen but these are more than i was thinking of paying so wonderwhat others could be suggested.

thanks

maybe buying al the equipment may a bit drastic when all i really need is someone to talk me through settings and setup

Have a look on youtube under studio lighting and sit back and enjoy :)

There are loads of really good tutorials on there and sometimes it's easier to understand when you can see what's going on :)
