Studio Share in Leeds

Yes
Just wondering if there were a few togs in the Leeds (West Yorks) area interested in getting together to find some studio space.

I'm not looking at business type premises, although it might grow into that, but initially thinking of somewhere to pool resources (cash, lighting, other eqpt) for the benefit of the group.

I'm sure there must be a few others out there like me that would like to have some room to develop their skills/portfolios and share experiences without it costing an arm and a leg.

What I'm thinking is that £100 a month would probably rent a decent space, here's one example
http://www.esaweb.org.uk/page.asp?sectionIdentifier=2004121_41399783&pageIdentifier=2006327_77285403

Five people sharing the cost is £20 a month each, or £5 a week. Working with a simple diary booking system I'm sure 5 people could work around each other for slots, or even group shoot.

Now that winter is rearing it's head, location shooting is slipping away.

I'd be interested. Another studio in the Leeds area charge £135 a day for full use of the studio, lights and sets.

Insurance and security would be other considerations.

Great, that's two of us :)

Suggest that if we get another one/two people interested then we can get into a bit more detail and post that up and hopefully try and get a core group going. Potentially even rent out at a really good rate to others as one-off shoots as well going forward

Sounds interesting and the rates look very good. I am interested but not sure if it would be practical for me travelling from Doncaster

No worries, just thought if we got it going then there would be no reason not to have "one-off" slots by the hour (at low rates) for others that didn't want to be part of the core group but might use it occasionally, not sure how we would work that might need one of the main group there but anything is possible if you think about it long enough.

Put me down as an interested party, if enough people get behind this and the costs are resonable enough I would be very up for this . Keep me updated John .

I may well be interested in this as well. But location would be important because i live in Huddersfield and work in Leeds.

Deffo up for sharing with Tug as well if he is up for it..!

Great

I think there's enough initial interest here to at least start looking at some premises and getting some more specific detail up

The premises I posted was just after a quick google, so there's bound to be lots more - just a simple equation of enough people putting into the pot makes it cheap enough to be viable

I'll do some more research over the weekend and try and get out to see some during the week as I live and work in Leeds it's fairly easy for me. Happy to have anyone tag along if they want to

I'll update the thread as I go along, if anyone else fancies doing some looking around then please feel free to add whatever you can

I maybe able to tag along to propesctive sites just let me know . John

I run a studio in Keighley (about 40mins from Leeds). I rent it out quite often, so if anyone would like to see photos of the space please PM me your email address.

Hi
I'm just in the process of buying a portable studio with 2 Lancarter elite pro 300 light
But I would definitely be interested in may be at least attending 1 month to gain experience and learn from you guys who have done this before :-)

Mike,

Its looks like there is some interest now, Maybe if any potential venues have been identified a meeting can be arranged...nothing too formal, maybe just a get together in a local pub to air a few ideas and suggestions.

What do you others think?

I wouldn't be able to commit to a regular thing, but would definately be interested in looking at any studio facilities that were available, on an ad-hoc basis...

Happy to meet up and go through some things (had a share in a studio for a year a while back, so know a thing or two (but no more than two :D)

Yes, definitely, pleased there is some interest. I hoped there would, can't believe I'm the only one in the same position, especially seeing all the threads on garage conversions - which, if you take the total cost into account must be a lot more than this option?

How about if I try and arrange a viewing of the one on the link I posted and tie that in with a couple of  :D Get the ideas flowing in a nearby pub and see where we go.

I'm sure if we think it through we can accommodate a core group that can buy into it and supplement that with those that want to use it occasionally. If we don't aim for the sun, we shouldn't get burnt.

I'll make some calls this week and try and set something up

Excellent, be good to get some real life experience of doing this - no reason why a mix of commitment levels wouldn't work well, would need a core group to cement it, but other people involved can only make it stronger

Thanks Laura, would like to explore some options in Leeds first and less of a studio, more shooting/group space - not sure if that's the best way of describing it :)

I'm no expert either, to be honest, which is why I'd like to try and organise this, a lack of somewhere indoors and dry with a decent amount of space (without lawnmowers in the corner) is a limiting factor in growing as a photographer I think and at a certain level it doesn't warrant the investment of a full blown studio, so I see it as a half way house - next stage of the journey if you will.

If we get it going then you would be more than welcome, hopefully we'd all learn from each other
