Stupid Silly Questions....

Sorry if this has been done before:D

just for hilarity's sake, what are the stupidest questions you have heard (or asked -don't be ashamed!) regarding photography!

for example, when I began my Photography A-Level (and the dumb-dumbs didn't drop out...) we had one or two really talented idiots. You know, the rare kind that get out-smarted by their own stupidity...

Anyway, the produced all manner of crazy thoughts:cuckoo:!

The following are all real:

(when first presented an SLR and Lens)- So *pointing at the lens* is the like a camera? -and I know it *points at camera body* this is the lens.... RIITE!

-"Germany?" I didn't know they made photographers, just nazis and mercedes??????????:cuckoo:

-(picking up one of those small instant-photo printers) "aah weres the shutter on this baby?"
-Told him it was a printer;
-"ooh, k.... *picks up a big lightmeter* "wheres the shutter on this baby?"
(Second dumdum arrives)
-"Naah bre, thas no camera! thas one o' them electric vibrators innit, ma sis has one!"

WTF!!!:cuckoo::cuckoo::cuckoo:

I went to a ruddy private school as well! -they got kicked off the course at least for not doing any work.... and pre-exposing every sheet of dev. paper in the dark room with their hand in a  position...... annoying if you need coursework done ASAP!

anyway, anyone else has one of these lil' gems?

a friend of mine (who to be fair isn't that interested in photography but has bough my d60 from me having had a canon 40d, god knows why he changed) asked me where in the menu you can adjust depth of field!!

 I suppose thats forgivable!...just

but asking a German teacher if germany made anything other than "nazis&mercedes".... really rather dumb:D

As the saying goes... The only stupid question is the one never asked

As Keith says there's no such thing as a stupid question, just stupid answers.

Setting up a shot, camera (1DS MKII) on tripod, just about to slot a ND grad filter in the holder and a chap nearby said he's pleased to see that some photographers still use plate cameras :cuckoo:

i suppose... but thinking a lightmeter is a toy for less than holy fun.... well i think there are exeptions sometimes!

I forgot one last one:

After about 3 months, and finally being bothered to find an SLR for themselves, they are given the 35mm film and one of them asks "so where does this battery go?" -straight after being told its the film:lol:

Perhaps I am being a little mean.

But they were a distraction to everyone else (showing up to the darkroom drunk on a few occasions (well, OK that WAS a laugh....) but you do get sick of it after a while!

I agree with the above. Lets hope that any newer members aren't put off asking questions for fear of being quoted in this thread and ridiculed. I hope I never become arrogant enough to think that I may never ask a silly question.

Chris :)

I agree!

I don't want newbees to feel put off either! (by all means ask what your will desires! I will strive to help answer!)

But I mean from the past, out n about.... you do just get some people who do ask stupid questions who don't really deserve any sympathy.

In my A-Level class, about 1/2 of the people who signed up to it in the begining did it to be lazy. most of them quit within a month (fair enough!)

but then there were these two, who just thought they could carry on, without doing ANY! work.... and disrupt others! and if they haven't done any work for 3 months, been shown WHAT an SLR camera is, how it works and what it looks like.... then to go on and say that a lightmeter is a "naughty" toy.... well I just really have no sympathy (especially as it made me have to spend 3 times longer in the dark room than was neccessary....)

See this thread as revenge for said silly sods! and just to post a funny question that you have/have-been asked at some point!

anyway! sorry to offend! we were all noobs once, all had questions. just some of us had some REALLY absurd ones....

one friend once suggested his friend's dslr was faulty as there was no lens attached to that. He thought that camera was faulty and said ''even my camera has an extension for lens, you dont!!'' then he showed us his vivitar digital camera !!!

i dunno, working in education you get some pretty stupid questions.

i always answer them of course :D

EDIT: I always do my best to answer them, that should say

I don't know bout yours, but my film SLR takes a battery. Why's that a silly question?

i was in the park taking pics (no not a parkwith slides that includes children) and this kid from my high school comes up and says "why you taking pics?" etc. then i take my lens off and he said "i think you've broke it" i was in stitches:lol::lol:

So what kind of questions do stupid people ask, then? Do they suddenly become smart before they ask the question, and then lapse back into stupidity?

I posted it up a shile ago, but a mate of mine at work asked me why on new high quality dSLRs do they still make them make the (simulated) shutter sound. I took great pleasure in telling him that that was in fact a real sound of the mirror slapping up.

I was taking some photos of some whales from a cliff top with my dslr. Next to me was a woman (just stating a fact - not passing judgement) with her compact struggling to see the lcd screen due to sun behind us. She said to me "How can you see where to point the camera? I can't see a thing on mine". I was about to suggest that she should try using the viewfinder on her camera too. But then I thought "sod it".

Ok, imagine the scene:

The student is holding the SLR. The teacher has just handed him some 35mm film, TOLD HIM it is the film, and showed him how to load a film (into the teachers slr) minutes after putting the tiny battery into the slr too, and being shown and told what it is...

the student then turns back saying "so where does this battery go?" (talking about the film). We then spend 30 minutes explaining and him not understanding that photos are taken on film or digital and that this wasn't digital!. For anyone else its an easy mistake, but these people were insane:cuckoo:

Our lass wants to know why we call ten pin bowling....ten pin bowling...(civil servant)

anybody got any photography questions to match it ??

thought not, they're only tough if you don't know the answer, but no photography question is as stupid as that

I had a very similar one a couple of years back when this chap came over to me, looked at my D2Xs, and pronounced that he was

"Glad some people hadn't switched to digital, nice to see a proper camera"

Dumbfounded, I just smiled and he walked away happy

I have another one from today-

Was in Calumet buying some film dev and glass-cleaner stuff, and there was a bloke looking at a large format plate camera.... the next thing I hear (as I was admiring the beauty!) the man thinking of buying? it asks the clerk, So, where's the AF on this thing?

The clerk's jaw just dropped! *the room went quiet* The customer was 100% serious!

This wooden beast! And the customer asking for AF function???

the clerk politley explained there wasn't any, it was all manual. The customer lost interest and left, all the staff broke out with laughter:lol:

I had many “interesting” conversations when I used to work in a shop, here are a couple.

Customer “I’d like a battery please”
Me “Sure, what type do you need?”
Customer “One of those Di-Lithium ones”
Me “Beam me up Scotty”

Customer 2 “I’m interested in a telescope”
Me “Certainly sir, Astronomical or terrestrial?”
Customer 2 “Extra terrestrial”
(X-files was a new and popular tv program at this time)

In those pre digital times it was fairly common for young couples to come in and ask for a Polaroid camera with a self timer. Polaroid run a program where you save up your dud ‘photos until you have the same number as in a new film pack. You send them in and they send you a new film to replace the one’s you were disappointed with. A man from Polaroid told me in all seriousness 90% (probably an exaggeration but clearly a good number) were pornographic. So you get an instant camera for your “personal” ‘photos then write down your name and address and send the duds to a stranger at Polaroid, weird.

The most stupid question I get asked (and I have asked myself) when I go shopping is “How would you like to Pay?”
How would I like to pay, I don’t like paying at all it’s just something I have to do.

Nothing to do with Photography but I was stopped under Section 44 and asked:-
Officer “Would you say you were of English extraction?”
Me “I couldn’t say, I’ve never been tested for it”
Officer “What was your place of birth”
Me “Sorry I don’t remember, I was very young at the time”
These are not recommended answers, fortunately the officer(s) had better things to do than hassle me further for being a smart ar**.

"beam me up scotty" ... you are a stunning example of excellelent customer service

if only those who worked in the jessops near me had a sense of humor.

Agree entirely - the man, or woman, who never said something stupid never said anything.

its all tongue in cheek guys, we're not gonna mock someone for not knowing for what iso stands for, just for the really funny stuff, like thinking a 1d is a plate camera
