I've got my - to be - 8 year old a 400d for her birthday and would like to replace the kit lens with something a little longer. A nifty 50 would be great, but to start with I want to get her a reasonable length zoom. We go to the zoo a lot together so something with a little reach would be good.
Not worried about a 300mm but do any of the shorter super zooms come into this price range second hand? Nothing too big and heavy though.

Any suggestions?

How about a nifty 250, the 55-250mm. You can get them s/h for about £100 or new for around £200.

tamon 70-300 is pretty cheap, bought new at £130 but I imagine they're cheaper now and 2nd hand, you might be paying half that. Its not the sharpest lens by far, but a great introduction to far reaching shots. :)

I'd certainly recommend the Canon 55-250IS - you should be able to pick up a good 2nd hand copy within your budget on here

Will work well with the kit lens as well giving her a good focal range

The 55-250 IS is the best bet for a starter zoom, the 70-75-300 MkIII is probably available at just a bit above budget but the optics are nowhere near as good as the 55-250 IS. I've had both lenses and the 55-250 is the best by far. Probably better using a zoom to start with rather than limiting her to a 50mm prime.
