Hi everyone, i am pretty new to this forum and totally new to photography, i will be getting my first DSLR this weekend coming, so cant wait for that, just to ask is there any particular subjects i should be starting with?, or is it a case of whatever catches your eye, shoot?

welcome gareth, if the photography bug gets you like it did me.. then you'll be finding yourself shooting anything that moves (and doesn't move!!).
my advice is to take as many pictures wherever and whenever you get chance. i bring my camera to work every day... just in case i see something on the way in or on the way home that i think is worthy of snapping.
it's when you start to get a collection of images together that you see where you've improved over a period of time.

go for it mate

I can't say fairer than that either, take as many pictures that you can and most of all enjoy photography as much as possible!

I too take my camera with me to work just in case I catch anything I would like to take a snap off. I know for sure there will be a time if I didn't have my camera that I would miss a shot!

ok guys thanks for the replies, will make sure i take my camera with me everywhere, work, social etc.

As said shoot everything but expect 90% to be no good. After time when you understand the ins and outs you will get a better 'keeper' rate. Read as much as you can on the interweb and don't be afraid to ask, no matter how daft the question. Use the search function on this forum also as the subject that you will probably need help on will have been covered before.

Above all have FUN!

Gaz,

I'm in the same boat, new camera, easger to play an try an get some good shots!

I've had three days with the camera where I haven't been working so looked on the web and have visited the local canal, port solent marina and the watercress line in hampshire, basincally anywhere local which could be interesting :)

So far I estimate I've taken 6-700 shots of which I like 3 lol...

I'm guessing either I'm crap (strong possibility) or I'm just learning and things will get better which I hope is the correct option of the two otherwise it's going to be a very expensive non prouctive hobby :) Although it does get me out of the house more than I have been...

Just snap away an enjoy :)

Yes, that is certainly worth bearing in mind. You'll get lots of rotten pics to start with as the bulk of us did (I still get rotten ones!).

If you're particularly interested in a subject (animals, gardens, people, steam trains, buildings, etc), photograph that. You're more likely to get better pictures of things that you are genuinely interested in. In the short term, a hit and hope approach may help you to find this, in the longer term it's unlikely to sustain an interest in photography, in my experience.
Stick with it though, it's a rewarding hobby! :)

As another thought, some books (like Langford's Starting photography) have little exercises in them which might give you something to work at. (if your having a creative block)

some of these tasks are "loose" for example, pick a letter of the alphabet and try and find 5 objects or shapes that symbolise this, or create pairs of contrasting images signifying maybe young/old, tall/short, big/small etc...

im sure there are more exercises on the web if needs be.

most of all enjoy it :)

cheers for the replies, i am thinking i would like to have a go at sports, footy, rugby, cricket, even some of the motorsports, etc, but i think i am going to get told my equipment (ooer mrs, lol) wont be up to it.

Only a bad workman balmes his tools (mine are awful lol)...

Every camera will be able to get good shots with the right person behind the viewfinder, it's just trying to figure out what you enjoy taking and going from there.

Or so I've been told :)
