Okey dokey, if you want to write a quick article about yourself and what inspired you etc, then I'll post that as well just as a short intro to you as a new affiliate. You can pm that over to me if you like.

As in (http://lukewoodfordphotography.com/blog/index.php?x=rss) ?

Not sure how it gets you noticed if you just ask people to subscribe ? What's beneficial about that ? If the pictures are good and you're posting the Feed in your signature in every forum you post on then it'll get around eventually. I personally only subscribe to 4 photoblogs that have attracted my attention over the years. Sure it would be nice if more than the 5 people that have subscribed to mine happened but I feel better in the fact that I know I never asked them to do it. They wanted to at some point hopefully down to the quality of the photos... /2p worth !

Im not sure whats beneficial but I thought if people subscribe it more garanteed hits? Im not asking people to just subscibe, I would return the favour, nothing wrong with promoting your business. However if subscribing doesn't help at all then I won't bother.

I completely agree with Puz. Its not going to do anything for you. It won't boost your google rank or anything. If you have good photography then I'll subscribe as its something I will want to see. If not, I won't. Its far nicer to know that people subscribe because they like your work and want to see it.

Thank you very much, and I just check my site is averaging 50 visitors a day, which isn't great but its going in the right direction :)

Hi Luke this is a good idea as you mentioned. I would say being noticed amongst other photographers is good, however would you prefer to get noticed by paying customers/clients or other photographers.

Think about it. You subscribe in your RSS reader and then what? You get to see the feed, the blogger gets +1 in his stats. Thats it.

Ok if it doesn't do anything then its a pointless idea and im glad I know. Thanks

Im averaging 2-3 shoots a week so im happy on that front :)

Subscribed anyway me. I like the stuff and I'll have a butchers when you add new stuff.

you say "think about it" but I said I didn't know if it would be benificial. Sorry for not being a computer wizz.

Neither of us are trying to say anything about being a computer wizz Luke. Just we agree that it's probably not beneficial to be honest thats all. You and I are getting about the same hits per day to our respective websites but you are getting shoots and I'm not. You're already up on me so further self promotion in anyway can only help !

It was the way Pete said it mate, wasn't aimed at you and I do appreciated the advice, ill put my time into other ways of promoting. To be honest I didn't do the blog to get shoots, I want it to generate exposure for me on a much wider scale.

Don't have to be a whizz. I just said to think about it. What happens when you subscribe to an RSS feed? Its just like an email subscription. It really isn't a public facing system to gain publicity, unless you use it to promote stats to clients.

In a parallel to the original query by Luke, how do people normally go about promoting their stuff ? How do you do yours Pete ? Would be useful to know :)

I've found that a sandwich board and a little bell helps. 'Hear ye!' kind of deal.

Word of mouth. I've never paid for advertising. If you're good at what you do and you're the only one who can do it, or do it bloody well, then word will spread.

:plusone:
Precisely what helped me, I emailed a lot of potential clients, did a great job, they then talk and make recommendations, snow ball effect ensues.

This summer though, I am going to pay for an add on a portraits forum, it's a 100 euro and I know a fair few photog's who have seen great benefits.

I've also been offered spaces in The Helsinki Times in exchange for small scale shoots. I'm still chewin that one over.

Primarily though, as Pete's mentioned, word of mouth is gold.

Word of mouth is gold in most industries to be honest but free advertising thats worthwhile can only help ? I wonder if I can the girlfriend to wear a board and wander around shouting 'Hear ye.' ;)

Ask her nicely, tell her that if you do get any extra clients or deals from her wearing the advert then you'll buy her and even bigger sandwich board, maybe with flashing lights too!

Does anyone know where I can view my subscribers to my blog? I can see I have subscribed to Thomas' in my google reader but can't see my subscribers. Again, I don't know much about this stuff :)

I'm not sure you can. I think you can only see the number but anonymity prevents you finding out who... :(

I have blog stats from feedburner and as long as the subscriber chose to subscribe via email then I have an email address of the subscriber. No details via RSS subscriptions though.

I think that Feedburner updates on a daily basis, I personally think that it can be a bit skewed sometimes too.

Its hard to track RSS subscribers but Feedburner does a good job. I have watched mine grow since installing it. It'll definitely track RSS not just email subs.

Another vote for feedburner here, but, don't they have to subscribe to the new feedburner feed to get noticed on the stats?
