Subscription to photoshop CS6

Has anyone done this?

I was thinking about a subscription as I can't afford to buy the full version. It will cost about £17.58 a month for 12months.

I know in the long run it may cost more but it would take a LONG time.

I worked it out current price of £667/£17.50 is about 37 months, then considering I could get the new version on subs after that but if i had paid outright it would cost me £190 to upgrade every year then that is £667+ (£190 x 3) = £1237/£17.58 = approx 70 months and then adding another 3 years of upgrades etc etc. (that is IF they brought a new version out every year)

Another way to look at it, the uprgrade costs £190 and 12months of £17.58 is £211 per year, then that is only £20 a year extra. So I don't buy the Full version upfront which cost £667 so that is £667 saved and £20/year extra. So £667/£20 = 33 years.

Obviously this is all based on the current price and will more than likely go up for subs but so will the full version.

Anyway, what I am trying to do is justify subscribing to myself, I guess I don't have much choice as I can not afford the full version.

What do you guys think?

Edit: I hope you can follow my ramblings!

I think you answered your own question.

Alternatively, how long would it take to save for the full version whilst using open source/free alternatives in the meantime?

Oh, and your maths is wrong, there have been 6 CS versions in the last 9 years and your break even point is just about 7 years (assuming an 18 month upgrade cycle, current prices and that you upgrade every time straight away). If you upgraded every other version (i.e. every 36 months), you would be ahead buying direct after about only 4 years.

Yes, I did make a spreadsheet....

I subscribed. Works well. I couldn't justify the total cost of it but the monthly cost is small and as you say, it takes some time to catch up with the boxed version!

Do you know anyone who is either a student, or a teacher? If so, they can get it from the Adobe education store for £190. Nudge nudge, wink wink..

Ahem, I think this is flying very close to the wind of breaking forum rules. What you appear to be suggesting breaks the terms and conditions that Adobe apply to the software sold for educational purposes and is, therefore, illegal.

Thinking of doing this myself. Is it on a month to month rolling contract or a 12 or 24 month commitment?

If you're happy to pay the subscription, and/or are unable/unwilling to buy the full version, but want the full CS* then illegal software aside, that may be your only option.

Enrolling on a short Adult Education course 'may' enable you to qualify for the Student discount. A Photoshop or Photography course 'should' qualify. I said May and Should because it depends on if Adobe have changed their rules. I have known a couple of people over the last year or so who have qualified through the Adult Education route.

And I doubt Adobe would come down too hard on someone taking advantage of somebody taking advantage of another persons Student or Teacher status, if it meant that they still got a sale, rather than no sale, or worse, someone going down the illegal copy route.

It should always be pointed out that there is a Student or Teacher option for those that may qualify, but don't know about it. A saving of about £450+ for CS6 is significant, and should always be highlighted as an option.

Can I ask what CS6 can do that Elements 11 can't?

Not trying to be funny, it's just that some people see CS* whatever as the 'do all' program, which it is, to aim for, but for a lot of people, Elements* may actually be all that they 'need'. And Elements 11 can be had for less than £70, a fraction of the £650 of CS6.

And btw, it is actually cheaper to bypass the Student/Teacher version of Elements 11 and buy from a regular retailer in most cases.

I suggested that further up.. apparently it's immoral and I should be flogged publicly.

That

Its a shame there isnt an elements version of indesign

Actually, as usual, you are over-reacting to a justified criticism. I never suggested any form of punishment ... but if the cap fits wear it.

On the off-chance that you haven't read the forum rules here's the bit that applies:
Prohibited Content

The following content is prohibited on talkphotography.co.uk.

Discussion of, encouraging of, or admitting to illegal activities, including, but not limited to :
Copying, distributing, uploading, downloading, or sharing copyrighted material
How to bypass copyright protection
How to obtain copyrighted material
Hacked or reverse engineered code
How to circumvent any payment systems
Peer to Peer software (even for legitimate use)
Breaking/bypassing EULA agreements
Linking to such information

What you were advocating is illegal. We have hundreds of threads on this forum every year with members complaining about someone "stealing" their images and what you advocate is no different.

If your own morality is so weak that you don't see the parallels then that's your problem but please don't try to entice others to lower their standards to your level.

It's not just on here either. I hear people complaining about images being stolen or used without a credit or payment but they use illegal software to manipulate them :)

Jon,

There are plenty of other, far less costly, editing suites out there. Many people on here aspire to own CS6 because of it's name and reputation as being the canine's small spherical objects but it is more than just a photographers tool and you're paying for all the extra bits even if you don't use them. Adobe's Lightroom and Photoshop Elements are much more cost effective options and there's little they can't do that CS6 can.

Be careful not to get caught up in the hype and think that CS6 is a "must have" ... because it isn't.

I have used GIMP and did not like the interface, and loads of others and never really got along with them. At the moment I am using the CS6 1 month trial and am loving it. Not sure what CS6 has that elements doesn't. But I also do abit of web design so photoshop will help with that too.

The big difference between Elements and CS is that Elements doesn't do CMYK. For most people that's neither here nor there and Elements does everything they want

12 month I went for. The rolling was more expensive.
