I was lazing around on the Plymouth seafront taking some pictures and this just happened to appear and sail right past me...

Unfortunately I was having some sharpness issues with my lens yesterday (I don't know why:thinking: ) so they are about as sharp as a loaf of bread but...

There was also another photographer there too, I had been sat on the sea wall for a while just lazing in the sunshine when he arrived and spent about 10 minutes standing around looking like he was waiting for something. I was just about to leave when the bloke pulled out a rather large lens (with a camera attached:p ), I turned round to se what was going on and saw the sub.

I would be interested to see what he got as his equipment was a lot better than mine.

Critique would be greatly appreciated.:)

I can hear the guy on the conning tower "I say spiffeh!, that chaps taking our photo what!!"

Did it surface beside the tug or sail up from behind somewhere?

p.s. they look sharp enough to me!

Subs sail in and out of Plymouth regularly, have seen a few when ive been down there. Some great shots.

Were the 2 police launches there too ? There are usually some very heavily armed people on at least one of the escorts.

Steep, its not deep enough there for the sub to be submerged until it passes the breakwater, the tugs and police boats escort them in and to the Naval base, or out past the breakwater.

They do yes and there is usually one moored on one of the bouys near the fort. It's the first time I have seen one that close (and had a camera). There were two tugs, two police launches and two fast ribs escorting it in, a lot more than the usual single tug and rib for normal ships.:p

The sub was moored behind a destroyer which is why its apperance was so sudden. Now if it had surfaced that would have been fun.

nice pics but they lack contrast

I tried increasing the contrast a little but that made the sea look very strange, I did however select the land and increase the contrast on that slightly. There was pretty bright sun and I don't think I had a CP on at the time. Could that be the reason for lack of contrast?

Sorry for the bump but I am quite new to photography so like peoples suggestions on improvements and the like so I can improve.:)

hope you dont mind but something like this:

Do whatever you want to them.:) That looks better, was that just a contrast increase?

I have just had a go at all of them, do they look any better (in the first post)?

they do look better to me :)

one other thing while were here, your water is sloping. Not as easy to fix with the border on.

I was a bit confused by Brummie's post as I thought the contrast was spot on. Then it all became clear...

I think it's a great set. As for the sharpness it's hard to tell but certainly at web size they look great.

Am I the only one that finds that sub a bit sinister?

Thats not fair every time I go on the hoe I never see anything so close apart from the odd tug or landing craft, I just wish I could get the shipping forecast from somewhere apart from the Herald (local paper) to know what and when is moving about! Good captures though!

It's amazing what USM does for small images. Most arent that bad but a few of the photos I took that day are quite soft. I blame it on a haze.:cautious: The lens did have a bit of difficulty focusing on the sub though, due to it being black I suppose which is where some of the issues came from I think.

I went down yesterday too and a minesweeper sized ship was coming out the Taymar. I must just be lucky.:D having said that I do spend quite a bit of time on the water and around that area so I probably see them due to that. maybe get a radio and listen in to the Longroom broadcasts, you may be able to get the details from there.:)
