I am sorry to start another what camera thread but my question is a bit more specific. I have just sold my Canon 1DmkIV as it wasn't getting much use. I am having a bit of a hard time thinking what to replace it with. I have been enjoying my photography less and less this last year or so. I am seriously considering selling up my 17-40,24-70 and 70-200 as well and downgrading big time.

What I am wondering at the moment is should I just go for a 3/4s camera and put the serious photography on hold for a bit? About the only think putting me off getting something like a Panasonic G1 is that I shoot some aviation and I doubt the G1 would be up to what I am after. Other than than the small size is a massive plus for me.

The other option is to maybe go for a 550D or similar and less good lenses than I have now. That would free up a lot of cash but still retain the DLSR. My bro has a 550D and it's a LOT smaller and much less heavy than something like a 7D.

G1 + lens seems to be around £470
550D plus standard zoom + tele zoom would be more like £1000ish I reckon.
G1 more compact
550D better quality.
Hmmm I just don't know which is best. :thinking:

I am now starting to do a lot more video than stills shooting and need a good travel camcorder. That's where the money would go.
 
5dmk1, not heavy by comparison to a 1D and you'll love the IQ, keep the 24/70 swop the 70/200 for an F4 (assuming you have a 2.8) or get a 200 prime instead

I tried a 5DmkI before and I hated the screen after the really sharp one on the mkIV and 7D I had. Also it's too big really. I am after small and lightweight otherwise I would get a 7D again. I am really looking at carrying a camcorder plus lightweight camera when I travel (which is a fair bit).
 
GH2 is the one to go for, same size as the G1 but everything in it is superior. It should do aviation for you too.

I had a look at one of those in town today and I have to say I really liked it. I was originally interested in the GF2 but after trying the GH2 I decided that was the better one as it felt more comfortable to hold.
 
Another question - What's the main differences between the G2 and GH2? Is there a difference in image quality or is it more to do with video?
