I've been looking at getting a Sigma 17-50mm f2.8 EX DC OS Lens following my previous thread, I'm at the stage where I'm looking at prices, I'm just so surprised at the difference...

Amazon, £489

Just to check, the lens Jessops are advertising, is the same as the one from Amazon and Jacobs, isn't it? If so, how can they justify the extra £70? :eek:
 
Don't forget, Jacobs has gone bust and is being controlled by administrators. I'm unsure how that affects their online sales but I'd do more research or visit the last shop they have open in Leicester.

They don't need to justify it, they can price it at £2000 if they want. They obviously won't sell many but that is not the point :)

It is up to the consumer if they want to buy from a major chain without any research on pricing then so be it. There are still people around who fear online purchases and they would be prime targets for this.

It is a business model decision more than anything. Say the lens costs the retailer £300 - one will shop sell for £450 and other shop sells for £600.
First shop has to sell twice as many and if it doesn't have as good a position in market it may not be able to do that so the shop selling at £600 is laughing.

With the internet this model will be less and less successful as it is as easy as it can get to compare prices now but guess they are still trying...
