Such poor quality.....Why?

Yes
I've had my beloved G7 for yonks, images have always been superb.

I popped down to Tenby on Wednesday and took just 3 shots of the harbour.

The quality is disgusting, the frames before and after the three shots are fine, I have never had anything like this before.

It's not the shakes, I just don't get the shakes with the G7's IS system.

Any ideas, the camera was set on fully auto, and no I'm not ashamed to say so.:)

100% crop of original not the RS one.

Exit data?
At the size I'm seeing there noisy but I can't really determine what else I'm looking for.
Clearly the lighting is flat so not great for landscapes.

All I can get is 1/000 @ f8, ISO auto.

I've taken shots in this sort of lighting before with good results.

My concern is that I have never ever had a shot like this with this camera before.

The images seem to be equally blurry all over, which suggests that it's not a focusing problem. Perhaps the IS system misbehaved a couple of times?

It doesn't look like it's OOF, and I don't think it's shake either.

What mode were you in? If it was auto or one of the semi auto modes then IMHO it looks as if the camera got the exposure wrong and ended up cranking the ISO up to compensate, resulting in aggressive in camera NR thus reducing the detail.

If the shots you got before and after are fine I'd put this down to a one off kind of glitch.

Edit: Ok missed the part about it being on full auto. However, I've got a G10 just sitting on my desk here and I popped out and did an experiment in full manual based on the settings 1/1000 @ F8. It's about 1 stop darker than in your photo here at the moment and I needed to push the ISO to 1600 to get a reasonable exposure. The end result was somewhat worse than the example you've posted. I'm now pretty convinced that the auto mode just simply got it wrong in this case.

It looks like noise - the G7 is a poor performer unless using at pretty low ISOs . I try not to go over 200 ISO if I can help it. Did you have to recover from a degree of under-exposure ? That will also drastically increase noise with the the G7.

Yes, it's definitely noise caused by using a very high ISO, which will always have a very bad effect on image quality - and especially with a camera with a tiny sensor.

And as CT says, if the image was also underexposed then that would make it even worse.

I agree this is the most likely reason.

Combination of high ISO and strong noise reduction gives this kind of nasty look.

I used to get this from my fuji S9600 anything above ISO 400.

Not sure what shutter speed you were using as its not clear in the above. If it was 1/1000 or shorter, at f8 then I suspect the ISO would have been high which has resulted in the noise
