Yes
Can you suggest a lens in the region of 17-50 thats of a decent quality, build and iq is essential.

But don't want to spend ££££s

cheers

Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 (non VC version).

what the non vc and why the none

I owned the newer VC (vibration control version, it's the tamron version of IS) and I really liked it.
I've never owned the non VC version but a lot of people say that the non VC is sharper.

How essential to you is image quality? If that is of paramount importance, then you may want to think about spending a few more ££'s and picking up an EF-S 17-55/2.8 IS second hand on this forum.

I know it is pricely, but in my opinion that is the best lens in that focal length for a crop sensor.

I guess it depends whether you feel able to find the extra ££'s. I can not vouch for the Tamron as I never used it, but it does seem to have quite a following.

Here's a couple - Also, my entry in this months comp is with the 50D and 17-55 combo

It's a great lens. The only real downside is the build quality is a little low. All the tests I've seen of actual real life shooting show it to be as good as the canon. Saying that, I'd have the Canon for the is in low light and the extra bit of reach if I had the cash.

I have had a Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8,the newer cheaper 18-50 f/2.8-4.5 OS and a Sigma 17-70 f/2.8-4.5

The 18-50 was quite good, but not at f/2.8, improved a lot down a couple of stops. The OS version I had was to be honest appalling and went straight back for a refund (just back luck I reckon) Last but not least the 17-70 which i was impressed with apart from it only managing f/2.8 at the very widest end.

The last one is now available in an OS version and despite the variable aperture could be worth a try at the price

I actually bit the bullet and bought the Canon 17-55mm in the end and it is a very impressive, but costly lens. One little niggle , you would think at the price they could include the hood

Just remembered I had a Tokina 17-35mm for my original Pentax DSLR and it was very good indeed, think it was around the f/4 mark, but can't quite recall. If their other lenses are as good would be well worth a look at what they have in the range you want

Had a quick look at the canon and a fair bit beyond budget is the tamron fast focus eg child running about also am I missing a point eBay sellers have these for 260 ish were as warehouseexpres and other retailers are more

I think I can recommend the tokina 16-50 f2.8 lens, great build and great image quality.

Some samples taken with it.

Onestop are  the only thing is that there's no real saving to be made buying from HK at the moment with the way the pound is, so you'd be as well buying from a UK dealer and getting a warranty.

ok no worries unsure on exchange rate but ther site offers the tamron for 267.00 with free del to uk were as whexpress are charging 335.00

would i not be saving still?

Make sure it's the same version, a lot of these HK sites can be misleading when there's an old and a new version of a lens. Personally I would get the non-VC version anyway, as there's no real benefit to having imagae stabilisation on such a short, fast lens.

Somebody's been to Valencia

The 17-55 f2.8 is my next purchase (although the Mrs doesn't know that yet)....
