Suggestions for telephoto lens for Nikon Fx

I'm looking for a reasonable telephoto zoom for my D700 ( so DX lenses are no good).

I dont do much telephoto work, but like to snap wildlife occasionally.

Not looking to spend too much as it won't get masses of use.

Is VR worth it?

How much is 'not too much'? A lot easier to work with around an approximate budget.

Without a budget impossible, but here are a few anyway.

Nikon 70-300 VR
Nikon AF 300mm f/4
Nikon 80-400 VR
Sigma 150-500 OS

Those range from between £300 to about £900 so take your pick!

Looking for under £200. Dont mind 2nd hand. And I guess I'd go higher if I can only get rubbish for that price.

Do you have experience of those lenses Tom? I'd prefer a zoom.

Nikon 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G VR (about £300 used or £390 new)
Worth more than twice the price?

Do people rate any of the Sigma/Tamron offerings?

The first one is distinctly average, the second one the VR and latest version is optically superior and is very good value for money, so yes it is worth the extra cost.

VR will be a great benefit if you do not intend carrying a tripod.

The 70-300 VR is excellent and generally very highly regarded. No idea what it's like on FX but not heard anybody complain. Obviously slightly over your budget but you could probably pick a used one up for £250 at a push.

The 70-300VR is great on crop and FX. it's a little soft at 300mm but for the price nothing can touch it. I also have the 300 F/4 which is tack sharp but that's above your budget.
