I posted recently regarding my misfortune on a recent trip to Mexico, on a day out I slipped with D90 in hand :( the 18-105 kit lens was on the camera at the time and took the force of the impact. The lens is completely shot and will be replaced by my insurance, the body is still to be checked out and decided on.

However at the moment I am 100% sure of a replacement lens, question is which one?

I am aware the kit lens 18-105 is OK but it was a bit soft and slow, therefore I am considering throwing some cash at the replacement so I am open to suggestions...

I am not rolling in it so anything up to £600 would be the absolute limit, I am ideally looking for a traveller, I found the 18 -105 a bit short to cover all occasions, I do have a 50mm prime and a 70 -300, I have a long term plan for 12-24 or 10-20 so looking for a good sharp zoom to fill the middle ground.

Any make considered for a Nikon mount of course

Cheers

Nikon 18-200mm?

VRII???

I have considered this £549 at Jessops, sure I could get it for less elsewhere but I maybe forced into jessops by my insurance company.

Do you have any reviews or examples shot be the lens you could point me to?

cheers...kevin

I use the 16-85 VR, very nice lens, has a bit of everything

Thanks graham

I think it would be perfect at the wide end but I found the 105 a bit short for a utility lens.

I have heard and read that it is a great lens though.

cheers

For that kind of money I'd get a used Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 and the Nikon 70-300mm VR (assuming your 70-300 isn't that already).

I don't personally, I've never owned or even used one, but I'm sure there are plenty of user here that have them ;)

Check this out from Uncle Ken :D

I had an extended play with the 18-200 yesterday and concluded:

+ Yes, it certainly does most stuff to an acceptable level without the need to change lenses
+ No, it's not better than a good twin lens setup - the setup that sdb123 suggests would be more versatile and argueably produce better results
+ It's really fairly weighty and as such would be too much, in my opinion, for an everyday walkaround lens.

It's a cracker, but in my own opinion better value for money and performance can be gained from a twin-lens setup.

Cheers,
James

James, Thanks for the test drive and the feedback...I am now tending to agree with sdb123 and yourself, I love my nifty fifty and will keep that as my only prime. However I am now looking at shorter faster zooms with more quality optics around the £550 mark. I will practice technique with my current Sigma 70 -300 and then invest in something of that range but again much higher quality when I think I am good enough for that level of investment.

I have a fe diferent lens's in mind and may start another thread asking for opinions and experiences on my shortlist.

Cheers....kevin
