I was trying to take some Lovely sunset images this evening but I kept getting flare spots on my images how do we prevent this?

I tried it with hood and without hood even it wont make any different as I am taking the sunset shoot direct to the sun as it goes down and change orange but I get these flare dots on my images which annoys me

use a hood, if not enough use your hand (as long as it doesn't show in the photo of coz:).

I get this a lot too - normally when using my 10-20 where there is just no way of shielding the lens from the sun :( I end up either leaving it in or cloning it out, never found a good solution to stop them in the first place :(

But What I am saying how can a hood help if I am taking the sunset as you know the sun will be in the image how can i stop it flare?

Mate how do you rate your 10 - 22 which you got canon or sigma? As I been thinking of getting one as my 17 - 40 is not wide enough at all

that seems to be normal for ultra wide lens, my tokina 17mm on full frame film body also has the same problem even sometimes the sun is not in the photo.

Im a bit of a fan of Flare, i think it has its place, if you are using filters its best to use as few as possiblr, you dont want too many air spaces.. if you are shooting into the sun there is not a lot you can do about flair as far as im aware, other than making sure the lens/filters are clean and smear free..

I have a thread in the landscape section and my fav pic in the bunch has a massive flair on it!

You're asking a lot not to get flare when shooting straight into the sun. Try it with the sun off centre - it might be better, or worse! Or wait until the sun gets lower and less bright.

Some lenses are more prone to it than others, and while a lens hood helps, it can do nothing if the sun is in the frame. If you have a filter on, it will make things very much worse - check the link that Dom gave in post #9.
