Have the D300 and 17-55 and 24-70 lenses. Thinking of getting the D700 so will either of these lenses become redundant or is there a case for keeping both of them? Most of my stuff is motorsport. merv:thinking::thinking:

17-55 is DX-only isn't it, so will kick the D700 into crop mode I think (smaller imge cirle and all that). Effectively, the 24-70 is the same focal length as the 17-55 (when used on a DX body like the D300); the 17-55 has an effective focal length of 24.5-82.5mm so against the 24-70mm they're identical just about :)

If you're going to just use the D700 as the main body then the 17-55 will probably be the redundant lens, that is unless you keep the D300. Just my opinion by the way...:)

For motorsport I take it you're thinking telephoto, which in that case I'd keep the D300 and not bother with the D700, instead going for a good quality, fast aperture telephoto like the 70-200mm VR or the 300mm f/4. You get that increase in focal length on a crop body to give you extra reach....

Would love to be in this position - having one of those beauties going spare :D :D

I'd agree, sounds like you'd be better keeping the D300 and replacing one lens with a nice tele.

Keep whichever lens is best suited to your style of photography.

Personally if I was sticking with the D300, I'd sell the 24-70 and use it to fund a tele. If you're definitely getting the D700, sell the 17-55 and use the money to buy a longer tele than the first option.

Or if you find 24mm is wide enough on your D300, or have a 10-20 or similar, you might want to keep the 24-70 and D300, and sell the 17-55. It completely depends on what you shoot and how you shoot it!
