Swap 35mm nikkor for 18-105?

I am seriously thinking about upgrading my D90 for a D7100, it's just a matter of raising the funds which is not easy on a pension. I currently use a 16-85 as my "normal" lens, and also have a mint, boxed 35mm. 1.8 AF-S which I never use. Would I be mad to swap the 35mm for a similar condition 18-105, and then sell the 16-85? I know what is said about glass but I don't think I would notice the difference in quality in the type of pictures I take.

I think you would be mad to do that, maybe just sell the 35mm, i'd keep the 16-85 as the 18-105 is a plastic mount lens, if you want to recoup even more cash towards a D7100 sell both lens and get a 18-70mm to replace that expensive 16-85mm (worth at least £250 second hand i'd say, plus £120 for the 35mm) 18-70mm as a replacement are around £80

I'd sell all your lenses and get a tamron 17-50 for £170 and add a 55-200mm when you can afford the £85 for that.

I have this set up with my D90 and agree with Phil the Tamron 17 - 50 is an excellent lens. I bought the non vc version.

Thank you for your suggestions, I already have a Nikon 70-300 VR, however the Tamron 17-50 sounds good, do they do a VC version?
