Swapping Macbook Hardrive

Ive got a 500gb hardrive on the way for my macbook and was wondering whats the best way of transferring all the data over?

Ive got the drive backed up through time machine, so is the best way to fit the new drive and install osx then do a backup or can i just clone the 250 to the 500?

Super duper, or Time Machine (or Super Duper as a back up, then Time Machine)
 
Off your back is osx not got everything on it.?
So all you need to do in theory is plug in the back up and let it roll?
 
I think you'll need an OSX disc to start the Time Machine process running. Someone correct me if I'm wrong :shrug:

Ive gone for the WD Scorpio Blue 500gb, it was that or the Black 320Gb and im after more storage rather than a speed boost.

I'll have a look at carbon copy as well thanks!

I wasnt sure what was the best way eg just clone the drive or to install osx and then do a restore.

I used SuperDuper to do mine ( I dropped the Scorpio Black in for the speed hike)

USB enclosure for the drive, plug it into a usb port, run superduper (it's freeware for what you need)

Once Super Duper has finished it's job, you just swap the drive over. You can then keep the old drive as a backup.

rebuilding from TM will take ages, it's perfect for recovering single files or folders, but a PITA for total recovery.
 
Just pop the new drive in a USB enclosure then you can use disc utility to copy the original disc onto the new one. once you have done that just swap them round. My site has instructions on swapping the drive. Run disc utility from the boot disc when you copy the drive. No extra software needed :)

Thanks for the tips everyone, ive got an enclosure coming with the drive so it sounds easy enough.
 
Well its all done and swapped now, copied with superduper then just replaced the drive and booted up. Took a while copying the drives but other than that no problems.

Cheers cowasaki. Most of that is pretty much the same from when I did the memory.
Looks like I may have a busy weekend ahead :D
