As the title really.....

Has anyone else gone from crop to full frame and found their 70-200 lacking for wildlife?

My 24-105 is pretty much glued to the front of my Canon 5dmkii since I upgraded from the 40d.

With the recent weather I have nt been out much at weekend walking with the family where I tend to try and capture a few candids of the kids....where I may have to swap to the 70-200.

I do stick a kenko 1.4x converter on if I am trying to photograph birds in the garden.

But 24-105 & 100-400 covers a lot more range than 24-105 & 70-200.

Just looking for others views really...in case I am considering a big mistake - trouble is the 70-200 is such a beauty of a lens, light and sharp....

They are differnt tools.
I use both the 70-200 F4 (Non IS) and the 100-400 on both crop and full frame bodies.
The 100-400 is an extremly versatile lens and is my most used lens (mainly because of birds and motor sport) however it is a bit heavy for a general purpose/walk around tele.

I have used the 100-400 a fair bit on safari, whilst it is definitely capable of being shot hand held for extended periods I somehow feel more comfortable with a mono-pod or something to rest it on. The IS is useful but shows it's age a little with regard to newer lenses. The comparable 70-300mm is lighter and sharper but you lose the extra 100mm length. The push-pull zoom is also faster but some people prefer the traditional twist ring. You may find the 70-300 lens to be an appropriate compromise between the two lens. That said the 100-400mm is a true stalwart of Canon's lineup, Perhaps the greatest testament to its quality is the lack of a mk2 despite the lens's great success.

Do funds allow you to buy the 100-400 as well as keeping the 70-200 ?

This would be my decision, the 2 lenses are different and would complement each other. If you can I would keep hold of your 70-200 as you are very happy with it...

Another alternative is the new 70-300L - there have been some posts on here of people who have swapped the 100-400 to the 70-300 and have been very pleased with it...
