Got a problem which i cant solve, am hoping some one here might be able to help please.:help: I have a compaq laptop running XP, i tried to restore/backdate windows a few weeks ago but it kept failing, so i reinstalled
XP and all programs updated windows as normal. All ok, just tried to back date windows again from created store points about 8 of them since i reloaded XP, but once again its failed every time.I have checked that its set to automatic, in the computer system settings, and all seems ok there. I do
turn off all programs before trying to restore still doesnt help though. Any advice is most welcome, thanks.
 
Not seen that one. Any errors ? Have you tried restoring whilst running in safe mode ? Is your AV protection up to date?
 
Have you run Hijack This! to see if there are any nasties present that might be preventing you using the restore feature?
 
Havent tried running in safe mode yet,.......have just download hijack will run it thanks for advice.
 
tried hijack but didnt see anything that shouldnt be there.! thanks anyway.
 
Have you had a look at the Event Viewer logs to see if there are any errors/warnings for the System restore, either when you tried to roll back or when the restore point was created?

how do i find these.! :shrug: thanks
 
Control panel > admin tools > event viewer or something like that. Been a while since I poked around a XP box but it should be in Control Panel somewhere :thumbs:

Once you've found and run it, you'll see a bunch of logs on the left, check each one for errors around the date/time you tried to restore and again for when the restore point was made. See if anything obvious sticks out.

Oh yeah,have found some stuff, will let ya know if i can solve anything from it. thanks. :thumbs:
 
What happens when you make a restore point. Does it make one OK and shows no errors?

Try making a new restore point, wait a minute or so and then try to see if you can get to restore to that point.

If all else fails you may need to Format and then re instal. Back up your data first. Bit of a bummer but it does clear out all the c**p that has accumulated over the years. May even making it run faster. Mine did when I installed a new hard drive and started from scratch

I have tried many times today creating new restore points and then waiting a few mins, i was turning off all programs when creating points, and when restoring also, but its failing, i have completely reinstalled windows, this week, i reinstalled because i couldnt roll back, i thought the same as you, but it hasnt fixed it, so it must be a program or something thats happend before and now. i have checked the log file, here is what it says......any help would be great........i have omitted name of user.!!


Windows saved user........registry while an application or service
was still using the registry during log off.The memory used by the
users registry has not been freed. The registry will be unloaded when
it is no longer in use.

This is often caused by services running as a user account,
try configuring the servicess to run in either the localservice
or network service account

also another on a error alert.........fault bucket 724433971
 
The first is pretty common and unlikely to be the cause. The second is hard to say without more details.

Did you check all the logs, especially System and Application?

Thanks for reply, i was doing HD check last night for bad sectors and errors, i need to run it again later for Bad sectors though as i had to cut it short, i will all so check out the link thanks. have also checked out the net for help, still a few more things to go through.

Managed to get the computer into safe mode, but not playing the game at all. Will try again later. Thanks.
 
This may be of no use but are you running Norton 360.2? My copy of the original 360 was automatically updated for the last month of my subscription to 360.2 and among the many, many problems this caused was the inability to run System Restore. It's because Norton removes access to this in case a virus gets to it. I had to switch Norton's protection off and them Sys Restore worked. It still didn't undo all the problems it had caused but at least I could remove Norton and replace it with something else that seems to like XP.
