Taken long distance shots?

Hello all,
I have a 70-300mm lens, what I am finding that the camera needs to be on a slow shutter speed to capture the light for shots like this.
Does this mean the only option i have, for taken long shots, is to use a tripod??
Sorry if this sounds a silly question, just learning..
Take care, Lance..

If you turn up the ISO, you'll find that shutter speeds will come down. You should be OK up to ISO 800 but much more and the noise will get intrusive.

and a big aperture (low f/ number) to get as much light in as possible. you using the VR?

Thanks guys for all your help... I just tried a long shot at the mountains where I live and I done all that your said and it worked perfectly!!
I am planning on taken shots of people at long distance (Like street work etc) If this helps..
Take care, Lance..

umm, if you are doing landscape stuff then I think you'll be better off with a higher f/stop to gain a wider DOF (and therefore, unfortunately, less light). do you have a tripod? that'd be best if you are taking landscapes in low light. failing that, find something nearby that is fairly sold to rest it on. Be sure to turn OFF the VR though if it isn't being used free-hand.

A higher ISO setting will mean that you can shoot at a higher shutter speed and get a lighter picture, but in turn creates a much "noiser" image, which you will be able to see on a bigger screen.
Try and increase the EV+2 on the camera and see if that makes any difference.

also advisable is to shoot in RAW (if your not doing so already) as you can always tweak the lighting and colour balance afterwards.

;)

If you are going free-hand, ensure the VR is also set to Normal rather than Active.

anyone got any recommendations? maybe try a few, f/8 thru to f/18 (i think f/32 is the max on that lens, but that'll be impossible without a tripod.
