Having seen how baggage handlers deal with suitcases, I would never let cameras/lenses/flashguns go into the hold.
I ALWAYS take my camera as hand luggage.
always hand luggage. You probably haven't seen how they throw around all hold luggage.
defo hand luggage!¬!
As above, hand luggage
Is it worth risking damage to your gear for the sake of taking it on the plane yourself
Mine always comes with me as hand baggage. Some stuff (mini tripod, printer and leads - all non essential or easily replaced) may go in the hold suitcase if there's enough weight allowance left.
definitely hand carry. even if you get gentle handlers, cold and condensation in the luggage hold is not good for glass and electronics.
that said, i did leave a lens in the suitcase once because my backpack was full, but it was in a lens case in a padded bag in between towels.
Only place is hand luggage
Defo Hand Luggage!!
Would never contemplate sticking my kit into the hold!
Cheers
J

I always put my spare batteries in my hold luggage....
Camera/lenses and filters go in the cabin with me though.
Just to agree with everyone else - hand luggage.
Make sure it is switched off, basically you can (should) only have the camera switched on at times when the seatbelt signs are off, otherwise they can get a bit annoyed (understandably due to safety reasons) if you try and take pictures during the most tempting times of take off and landing.
