Taking just the sound from a DVD to iTunes - is it possible?

I have a DVD that I would like to just take the sound from (it's a live band DVD) and put it on my iPod so that I can listen to it in the car/at work etc. Is this possible?

I know it's relatively easy to rip a DVD to iTunes but I would rather not take up a load of space with video that I'm never going to watch on my iPod.
 
you would have to demux the audio from the DVD, something i have never done but you could either have a look here http://www.videohelp.com/ or http://www.doom9.org/ for any info

Is probably quite easy to do with the right tools
 
You could use Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/about/) to record the sound while playing the DVD in your computer then export as mp3. I've used it to transfer some old tapes but not sure if the quality is OK for you. Not spent enough time with it.
 
its dead easy , i've done it so it must be !

I just used a free sound recorder (can't remenber which one)

load and play the DVD and hit record on the free sound recorder

it should then record the DVD soundtrack

there's probably a better way but this worked well for me
 
i did this years ago for a faithless DVD, you have to rip out the AC3 track then extract the audio to an MP3 format.

there are programs out there that let you do that, i cant remember what i used though.. sorry..
 
Yes it is easy peasy. Use this technote from the Slim Devices wiki. It talks you through the demux process and conversion into a .wav file. Once you have the .wav file, you can then convert it to FLAC, mainly for tagging purposes and you'll have a stream of data. If it was LPCM, then you're done. If it was AC3 or DTS, then it needs to be fed into a decoder (your AV amp) otherwise it'll sound like digital noise.

You can use the realtime options mentioned about (sound recorder) but you'll be waiting a long time, the audio quality may suffer and you won't be able to copy 5.1.

I've used the process above many times, it works perfectly.
 
Alternatively, use DVD shrink(free app) to rip the DVD to another format.
Load the new version into AVC (any video converter - also free), in the ouput options choose MP3 and bingo, there you go.
