afternoon,

im off to portugal for a week next month and im having a bit of a debate with myself what to do with cameras.. my options seem to be:

1) sort the insurance and take the canon and 18-50
2) and/or just take the gf's lumix p&s
3) use it as an excuse to get me a nice new (waterproof?) p&s

i cant quite make my mind up, part of me wants to take the canon but i dont want to be worrying about it all week. whereas if i had a waterproof p&s i could litterally take it everywhere with me.

opinions? am i being to cautious and should i just man up and take the slr?

:bonk:

Firstly, check your house insurance. There are a number of posts about it on here. MoreThan insure for upto £1500 per single item. Not sure on Canon prices as I am from Nikonia, but I guess it would cover it.
I took mine to Spain and was happy. Also took my TZ7 aswell.

Its really down to what you intend to shoot when your over there.

Take the SLR. I went to the Algarve exactly a year ago and took a p&s. Got some holiday snaps but that is all they are and regretted it. It's no big deal taking the SLR so long as you say, it's covered by the insurance and you have a sensible bag to carry it in.

Does your house Ins not cover it free? Mine did upto 30days in the EU I think it was.

Another vote for house insurance. Mine covers personal possessions out of the home (including abroad) up to total value £4,000, single item £1,500. I had to phone the insurers to get that increased to £2,000 to cover my 5D mk II, for which they charged a small increase to the premium (something like £10 a year!).

i dont have contents insurance of my own (while my basic stuff is covered by the policy holder at my address i wouldnt be in a position to add anything of value or make changes etc). hence photoguard covers my kit.. hope that makes sense.

I think it's a case of damned if you do, and damned if you don't. Take the DSLR and spend the week cursing the size/weight, because you don't really need it, or leave it behind and curse yourself for not bringing it. Been there.

Can you check out what there is, and what you might want to photograph, where you're going? Are you staying in a hotel with safe facilities for valuables?

I don't carry a camera all the time, and I gave up carrying a lot of gear on holiday back in the film days. A compact worked for me then, and it still does, but that's just my choice. Some people are happy to backpack with a D200 and a couple of lenses, but I'm, most emphatically, not! I think carefully though, if I am going somewhere special and expecting outstanding photo opportunities that call for the big camera, and I may decide to bite the bullet on the size and weight.

well unfortunately i cannot change my photoguard to cover only some items abroad it has to blanket cover everything (£5k worth of kit) which works out at £81.

whats a decent tough p&s and what sort of cost these days?

I've just come back from Mexico and to be honest I'm thinking about taking a p&s next time for the following reasons :

i) each time I took it out of the room it took 15 mins to clear of mist due to the humidity.
ii) most of the pics have only the wife on them as not many people could take a pic with it, including my wife.
iii) because I had it I wish i'd took a tripod as well so more baggage.
iv) everytime I took it to the beach I was paranoid I'd get sand in it.

I suppose it depends on wether you're wanting good photographs or holiday snaps (which unfortunately mine all are).

1 hassle
2 risks
3 reasons for hols

take the p+s...man up and see if you can shoot without a big canon...erm cannon
