Never had a problem with it as hand luggage. Had 3 cameras, laptop, iPod, PDA and other bits in my rucksack last year, no problems at all. If you haven't got some already, get some Travel Sentry luggage locks that US customs can lock/unlock themselves or they'll just cut you existing locks off if they want to look in your bag (that's your luggage in the hold!).

Hi, when are you going?, a friends (a tp member) over in the USA now, he has taken a 450D & 40D & various other lenses & kit, he's travelled from Manchester to LAX (Los Angeles), he'll be back soon & no doubt give you first hand info :)

Not been to the states but I've had SLRs on holiday for the past 4 holidays, plus numerous domestic trips also.

Each time I've used a dedicated camera bag of one variety or another (compliant to the regs on bag size) and have had all the usual selection of stuff in there. In addition, I always pack a fortnights worth of insulin and my insulin pens, blood testing kit etc in there too.

Never had a problem at security once, not even a routine search of the camera bag.

As Tina said, as long as the bag is not to big to get past check-in, and you have no restricted items in it, there really shouldn't be an issue.

In South Africa as I write :-) flying home tomorrow..

Camera bag, laptop + camera + Flash + lots of junk + book etc..

No problem at all...

just needs to not look 2 huge I guess :)

Taken my kit as hand luggage several time to alsorts of places around the globe and never had a problem. I also never bother to lock my hold baggage, if somebody wants access they will just cut into modern cases

thanks for the repliys guys.
im traveling on thursday this week. My bag hasnt got any locks on it. Im dreading getting to the airport and being told i cant take it as hand luggage and having to put it though with my suit case, id be worried about it going missing.
Gona have to look into it a bit more before i decide what to do

Taken mine to Turkey last summer as hand luggage without any issues.

more repliys while i was writing :D

thanks guys thats quite reasuring sounds like it shouldnt be a problem.

I've carried my cameras on flights to the USA on hundreds of occasions without any problem whatsoever. On a few flights I've been asked to go through a short security inspection but there's never been a problem.

You'll have no bother.

Took mine to NY in Dec 09, had a propper camera bag with 3-4 lenses.
No issues with taking it as hand luggage :)

I've not gone to USA but European flights no problem. Most flight let you take 1 piece of hand luggage, so I have a small case which is within the size limits, put my Lowepro 200 with camera etc in it, with other bits and pieces and it goes O.K. I put the laptop in the wifes; if I didn't she'd only fill it with her stuff:lol:
