Ok this is a really daft question so I apologise in advance!

I got my first SLR a week or two ago and naturally have been snapping away trying to learn the ropes. I've recently read that shutters are expected to only last for so many clicks and have started wondering if i should take less snaps or I'll wear the thing out before I'm ready to replace it.

sorry if thats a daft question!!

:)

You bought it to use it...so use it!!!:)

You should be able to Google your way to some specs that'll tell you what your shutter is rated at but lets assume that it's 100k...that'll take you some time to clock up so don't worry about it. :)

It's about the same as driving your car around, do you worry that will only last 100,000 miles (well ish etc)

Cameras on here are a little like motorbikes - regularly coming up for sale with ludicrously low mileage, it seems.

You should start taking care of the shutter once you're past 50,000 shots. Up until 10k, your camera isn't even broken in...

Live a little, push the shutter button!

As above really by the time its worth worrying about you would be changing for a newer body

100,000 miles on a car :naughty: I'm on 175,000 and expect at least another 100K . . . No major problems, I'm fussy over service periods @ 12,500 miles and using synthetic oil. Its a diesel so that helps, nothing fancy in a Citroen Picasso.

Camera shutter actions . . . about 450! last time I looked, yep its fairly new;)

The only reason I'd care about shutter count is if I was buying a 2nd hand camera, not so much because of the shutter breaking but more a general view as to the use the camera has had.

I expect my new camera to last me at least 2 years before I look at picking up something else but the reality is it will probably be serving great pictures for years to new owners after I've moved on.

Like a car I would sent a camera for a service every so often just to keep it ticking over but I wouldn't put it in the drive and stop using it ;)

Yeap, and if you service your camera the same, and replace any parts as required, it will last approx the same. Course, whether or not its worth it for the money when you can buy a new one is another thing ;)

you will probably find as you get better you will take less anyway as you will see the better shots. the first time i used mine at at rally i took 700 shots last week at darley moore i took 300 because i could see that some shots would not work . my advise if your new is learn from what youve shot what works and what dont i was shooting the same pic at different setting to see *** i get as a end result i still do this but to a smaller extent .

Use it.

If you find it wears out buy another or upgrade to a sturdier model.
