I have a 20D at the moment and am thinking about an upgrade. I would like spot metering and a larger screen.
Is it worth going to a 30D or is the extra worth it for the 40D?

Id leave the 30d out of the equation and go straight for the 40d its a cracker.

Weeell, I've never been out with a 20D or a 30D. I went steady with a 40D for about 18months but got seduced by a 7D earlier this year We've been going steady now for 6 months and the relationship is pretty solid. However I have to admit to being a bit of a camera tart and the 40D and I sometimes have a bit of a fling. We've even been out on double dates!! I mean the 7D and I are tight but I could never completely give up the 40D.

Actually I have a nifty little 450D hidden away that the other two don't know about, but that's another story.

LOL Greywolf, Sell me your 40D, or better still, take my 20D to flirt with, safe in the knowledge your 40D will have a new, more permanent affair with me!!!

I used to have a 40D and used my wifes 30D. The 40D is worth the extra for the better menu, noise control, auto iso(if you want it), live view, sensor, cropping. That said the 30D is still a belter.

Good old 40D has been getting some fine praise lavished upon it on here over the last few days
Is that because the 60D was such a big let down or the alleged less than stellar performance of the 50D

I think the 40D is one of those items that is just about spot on, bit like a bands best album and will be remembered fondly as such

So go for it, probably why I just purchased a low mileage future replacement for my nearly 70K clicks old one

I would agree that the 40D got things just right.
I have not yet found any reason to upgrade from it, and doubt I will any time soon.

40D is just the sweet spot of performance and price.

Thinking of going full frame myself and am incredibly reluctant to let it go. It does so many things so competently.

I wish I had the cash to upgrade and keep it. Its fast, handles noise well for a crop and liveview is ace for macro stuff. I use mine with a 17-55IS and its an magic combination.

I've a feeling that a 5dmrkII is an itch I'm going scratch and then regret, and I will probably make that leap but if the 40d was all there was, I would live with that.

Fantastic camera, Buy one.

I must agree with the above I had the 20d and the wife the 30d, but wanted to upgrade mine mainly for the bigger screen, and I do love it, but do agree the 30d is also a good tool. I do still often use the 20d as well.

I had a 20D which was very good in its day. Which has passed. 30D didn't improve things much.

Then came the 40D, which IMHO is a high spot in the short history of the DSLR. It can still hold its own with the best today. I had one of those too. Great used buy.

The 20D's day has passed? Oh dear, that's such a shame.

I amazed that I manage to take shots and produce prints at all.

If you're looking to upgrade, personally, I'd go the extra and get the 40D, I've no experience with the 30D, but from what I've read and the 40D was a significant updgrade, I'm very pleased with mine

Go for a 40D. I am on my 3rd one! I sold the others to get different/better cameras but kept coming back to the 40D. I am now happy with what I have and don't intend changing any time soon unless the 7D becomes vastly cheaper.

40D is Fantastic but if i may also offer a little suggestion.
Go buy some replacement focus screens.
This was something i would never have thought of or dreamed of as i thought it was a waste of money.
I had occasion to replace one in a 40D with a better one and i was gobsmacked at how bright and crystal clear everything became compared to the default one which is good.

which focus screen are you recommending Craig?

I was hoping (rather stupidly in hindsight) the 60D would be a level replacement for the 40/50D, although really the 7D is the successor to the XXd lineage given the 60D not really fitting my requirements. So I'm intending to hold on to the 40D now!

I would be interested too please in the focus screen, know mine is a bit dirty and might as well replace if its an improvement

I have the 30D and have used the 40D quite a lot. I don't think the differences are compelling - unless you want Live View, which isn't a deal breaker for me - but I'd probably get the 40D if I was in your position and didn't mind the extra cost. The 30D is still an excellent camera though, and I doubt if you will regret the choice if you go for it.

The biggest drawback of the XXD series, for me, is the AF system. The 7D seems to be a great improvement and is the first intermediate Canon to give Nikon's D300/D300s a run for it's money. That will be my upgrade, when I can afford it, unless I decide to go back to Nikon. I shot Nikon for many years in the film days, and still have a soft spot for them. More emotional than rational I suppose, but it's just a hobby for me and there's no harm in that.
