I am looking to replace my Sigma 18 - 125 lens for a Canon IS lens.
I have a short list with the 17-55 F2.8 way out top, but probably too expensive.
The others are
18-135 F3.5 - 5.6 is
18-55 F3.5 - 5.6 is
17 - 85 F4 - 5.6 is

Out of these 3, the 17-85 seems the best on paper, but will I suffer from a high F4?
I want a good sharp IS walk about lens. Body 20D
Over to you....

24-105 f/4 L plus a short length prime?

Canon 15-85, great reviews and much better than the 17-85.

Save up for the 17-55 2.8. Or the 15-85.

I had great fun with my 17-85 with a 450d, but haven't used it in 2yrs preferring fast primes these days. however i'd say it's a cracking lens for the money. how much is a 15-85mm?

18-55 is a cracking kit lens and should be very cheap 2nd hand... but I find the rotating front element very annoying.

I have no experience with any of the others you listed...

The 17-85 i found to be very soft.
The 15-85 as mentioned is suppose to be very good but still selling for around £400 used.
