Tamron 10-24 - is it really that bad??

Hi folks,

On a budget, want a wide lens.

I had a Tamron 18-200 and I was quite unhappy with the quality, but it was half the price of this one.

I know it's not the sharpest, but is it terrible.

I really want someone to say it kinda ok - but the truth would be good too.

Thought?
 
I have this lens, I bought it because like you I was on a budget at the time.
It does me ok for what I use it for, it is sharp and takes a good pic, not used it all that much to be honest but when I have I have been pleased with the results.

It is actually very very good. I own one and love the quality of it. A bit soft corners wide open at 10mm but really nothing that you can't fix with a little bit of PP or by stopping down and moving one or two mm less wide. Otherwise when it comes to image quality it is an excellent lens probably as good if not better than the 10-24 Nikkor.

I know most people wouldn't care about AF performance at such a wide angle lens but AF is abysmal. This is why I bought a s/h 12-24 Nikkor. There is one on here for sale for a very reasonable £425 and also was just a few days ago one at MPB for £419.

If you can stretch to that amount and you can live without the extra 2mm (which truth be told are two very significant mm when you speak about UWA lenses) go for it. Otherwise I don't think you will be disappointed with the Tamron. If you are a Nikon guy I might be selling mine on here in the next few days...

Currys have them for about 230 quid after the 20% off, looks like only in Nikon mount though for now

Its 279 quid, but the 20% discount is applied at checkout time, ends Wednesday so get it now if you want one

Mispriced on website as £279, now back up to £345.

So after my 20% off I'm paying £230 - worth a punt I think :)

Glad to be of assistance Barry, make sure you get that extra 20% off as it definitely stated subtracted at checkout

More than worth a punt at that price, been looking at the Tamron 90mm macro, suppose that has gone up in price too, wasn't sure I needed it though

I spoke to them on the phone and they had 100's of calls about the 20% not going through at checkout, they'll automatically refund to my card apparently. I'll be keeping my eye out.

I am just getting into my plugins in Photoshop, so not too worried if it isn't pin sharp out the camera.

Excited now!!

Likwise, make certain you check it out in your first 7 days. Last Friday I was at SRS and check the tamron against the Sigma and also the 8-16mm. The Tamron was seriously so soft. Hope you get a good one.
 
thanks for the heads up on the currys discount just checked out a lens i want and its avery good price just need to sweet talk my way into a purchase!!!
 
Bloody Currys. Never should have trusted them.

They are saying they made a mistake and won't apply the 20% discount as it should have been £345 on their site!

have they already taken the money from your card? Think if they have they are obliged to honour their offer, if not its buy at the stated price or cancel

I'm guessing the discount had already been applied and someone has mucked up big time
 
I think you are exactly right. The price I paid was 20% less then the price they have it on for now.

It's all paid for and with the courier, so I think they have to honour it.

We'll see, I've sent them a screenshot of the deal at £279 showing 20% to be taken off.
 
Legally binding I reckon, bit late for them to change the rules now, bit different to realising the mistake and cancelling the order as has happened before with mispricing
 
I have one in Canon fit and I am very happy with it.

Only thing is that Tamron lenses come with 3 years warranty if you buy from a Tamron Super Stockist (which Currys are NOT according to this: http://www.tamron.eu/uk/service/buying-a-tamron/dealer-search.html)

So if you can get it from one of the super stockists for the same price then you should probably return it to Currys as not only they do not honour the 20%, they also cut down your warranty down from 3 to 1 year.
 
Gonna road test it and if it is too soft and they don't do the 20%, then return it.

Don't think I will get it even at £279 from many places.
 
They have now put the price up to £359.99.

I wonder if they have a clue what they are doing over there?
 
I got my 10-24 second hand for my 60D and have been very happy so far - but far from a pixel-peeper.
The AF can be a bit slow, but generally less of an issue for the shots I'm taking with this.

I just ordered a Tamron 70-300 from park cameras and they claim a 5 year warranty as ordered from a Tamron stockist?

The pricing on the 70-300 wasn't THAT far off secondhand, so happy enough to spend the bit extra from a UK stockist with a decent warranty etc.
